Friday had come around and it was time for the soccer game. Our school team was facing off against Grannis High, a match that always promised an exciting time. Our schools were pretty evenly matched, but they had a new forward this year that was reportedly an amazing player.
I instinctively moved back when the cold creaminess of the face paint touched my cheek, being yanked back by James who had been charged with giving me two straight lines of red on each cheek. Chesterford Highs' colors were red and white, but painting my cheeks white was much less fun than the dashing red.
The game was due to start at 19:45, so we had just about an hour to get ready, something Nate didn't fail to remind us of several times. That man hasn't been late to anything in his life, and he wasn't about to start now. We were sat in James' basement, a large concrete room with a tv, gaming console and several couches and rugs.
The sound from Nate's game of FIFA roared in the background as he scored another goal, just in time for Dan to make his appearance.
"Hey!", he greeted us, Nate rising from the couch to clasp his outstretched hand and dunk his shoulder.
"I brought us something to drink!", Dan continued, holding up a brown bag with what I assumed to be a bottle of vodka.
As Dan moved inside the room, Nate went behind him to greet... Kade. My heart did a summersault in my chest, my breath catching at the sight of him.
A smile lit up his face, skin crinkling around the eyes as he too dunked Nate's back before letting his eyes sweep over the room and landing on me. My breath caught and I answered his smile, rejoicing in the fact that his eyes seemed to get just a little bit lighter at the sight of me.
"Bro, calm the smile. I can't paint if you do that.", James complains, grabbing my chin forcibly to keep my head in place. I give a small apology before going back to observing the others. Nate had planted his ass on the couch again, resuming the game as Dan opened the bottle and took a swig before offering it to Kade.
He looked unfairly stunning as he tilted his head back, his long sinuous neck moving as he took a gulp of the strong liquid before putting the bottle down and grimacing.
"Damn!", Dan exclaimed as his opponent scored, "Fuck, I swear they're cheating!"
"Calm down man, I'll help you. Grab me a controller.", James said as he released my face, finally satisfied with his work.
"Who's gonna paint me and Kade?", Dan asked before taking another swig.
"I'll do it!", I hastily let out, making him look at me quizzically.
"Okay man.", he answers, still confused but welcoming the change. I never painted anyone, I hardly agreed to get painted myself. The feel of the paint just icked me, I only did it for school pride.
Dan went to occupy my seat as I stood up, brushing his face off and moving his hair away from his face. He looked up at me expectantly, pulling the bottle away when I reached for it.
"Paint first, booze later.", he concluded. I sighed and sat down in front of him, grabbing the small jar and smearing my finger in it.
"Okay, what do you want to do?", I asked and he began describing the way he wanted it to look. I complied, wanting to get it over with so I could move on to Kade. My whole hand felt wrong, and I couldn't stop concentrating on it. It felt like I wanted to slap something, so anything to while the cold wetness of it.
I finish Dan's face paint in record time, avidly wiping my fingers on a piece of paper.
"Now give me the bottle.", I say, gesturing for him to give it here. He does, and I tilt my head back, lifting the bottle to my lips. I don't want to be too drunk, I just want that pleasant buzz. The alcohol burns on the way down, hurting my throat and leaving a warm sensation in its path.
