You and Shinso are third years here! No playlist this time

You tried to wipe the streaming tears away from your cheeks, a sob choking you up when you couldn't hold it back. Your hand trembled as you shoved a few items of clothing in your backpack and zipped it up. All you could allow yourself was a silent whimper, otherwise you knew you'd make too much noise and awaken anyone in the dark of the night.

You kind of hated yourself when you were like this. You used to be so genuinely happy, bright smiles always present on your face. Sure, you had bad moments like everyone, but you always managed to push through with the help of friends. Now, you just felt so alone and so exhausted. Being away from everything seemed like the only solution, like trying to find an island in the huge body of water you were drowning in.

You whipped out your phone, frantically scrolling through your contacts. You tapped on the one contact that you truly believed would be there for you. Being alone right now would mean you were bound to do something incredibly stupid. You held your phone to your ear, pacing your room as it rang.

"Kinda late to be calling, isn't it?" You breathed in relief when you heard Shinso through the phone. "What's wrong?""Uh, 'Toshi? I, uh, I know it's late. And I'm sorry, but I just can't do this anymore." You paused when another sob came out, breathing heavily.

Shinso's voice switched from its usual tone into one dripping with worry. "Whoa, whoa. What's wrong? Breathe, breathe."

"I just need to be away from everything right now. I don't know exactly where I'm going, but I need to go, 'Toshi." You brought your hand to your warm forehead. Your head was throbbing painfully.

"Okay. Come over. Just stay on the line and breathe for me, okay? In. And out." You swung you backpack straps over your shoulder, trying to breathe along with him. You silently opened and closed the door behind you, heading straight for him.

The car slowed to a stop and Shinso switched the car's engine off, along with the lights that had been guiding you on the roads. Soon, you and Shinso found yourself sitting on beach sand, on a blanket he'd brought along with him. Moonlight danced on the waves and you sat with Shinso, just breathing in the salty air carried by a light breeze.

Once Shinso had held you in his arms when you first arrived, even when you had to pull away so you could be on your way, Shinso never completely stopped touching you. His hand had been on your knee as he drove, trying to offer you some sort of comfort. Now, his arm went around your back, your head resting on his shoulder. You had stopped crying, but you were still sniffling occasionally.

Shinso was just praying that he was doing the right thing. He knew he could never find the right words when they were needed, and that he wasn't the best at comforting people, but he was willing to try so hard just to make sure you were ok.

"Do you... wanna talk about it? I'm willing to just listen." His hand rubbed your arm."I'm sorry I made you worry about me. I was just overwhelmed. School's just getting so intense, and we're leaving soon. I have no idea if I'm even ready for the future. I just feel so alone, even though there are people around me. So much pressure."

Shinso held your chin between his thumb and index finger and moved your head so that he could properly look at you. Even though you'd tried your hardest to wipe them clean, your cheeks were stained with dried tears. Eyes red and swollen and still jerking from random sniffles, you looked like a mess. It hurt to see you like this.

"This probably won't seem like much consolation, but I'm here. I can't offer you much, but I can offer you my presence and support. As much as we want to, we can't run away from our problems. That would be really amazing, but we can't. The most we can do is have little getaways, like this. Little moments where you can just distance yourself from life, where pressure is lifted off your shoulders for a while."

Shinso paused to look at you properly once again. "So, maybe running away wasn't the best idea." You both chuckled lightly. He was just glad that you had been listening to him. "But hey, maybe we'll have a mini-adventure during the night, and say we ran away for a little while." You smiled; it was small but the first genuine one in a while. "And I know you're up at all hours of the night, so you're gonna be my partner-in-crime."

"That's okay with me." Shinso gave you his smile and you knew it was genuine when you could see his teeth. "So, let's stay here for now," you turned back to look at the ocean as he spoke. "until we have to go back."

As you snuggled closer to him, you knew right there that you didn't want to go back, but maybe it'd be easier with him.

Yeah, it should be easier, now that you weren't really alone.
