𝐌𝐀𝐘𝐁𝐄 𝐈𝐓 was the uneasy feeling edmund felt when he saw that woman on the station, treating somehow harshly the kid she was supposed to look after. or just the insecurity of being far from home and with his siblings, whom he really didn't like.
the trip was long and stressful. first, there were other kids in the carriage. it was awkward for the first half an hour until the kids got out of the train. their butts were the perfect definition of a square after sitting in the same position for so long on the mattress.
peter and susan talked with each other, lucy slept half the journey, and then both susan and the youngest read, while edmund looked out the clear window, and peter took care of them when sleeping.
the day was so cloudy and rainy, cold breeze getting on their skin, crawling into the boys' trousers and the girls' long skirts, freezing their legs. it was spring, however, the cold was still there, making them wear coats even if it wasn't so cold.
the train reached their station six hours later and it was almost afternoon. a grumpy and unfriendly woman, ms. macready was the one who took them to the professor's house in a carriage they sat in for the whole ride yet again.
though, more than a house, it was an enormous, old mansion.
"professor kirke is not accustomed to havin' children in this house," ms. macready informed when they entered the hall. "and, as such, there are a few rules we need to follow! there will be no shoutin', or runnin'" she turned around when she reached the stairs. "no improper use of the dumbwaiter..."
the four kids climbed up the stairs and looked at everything around them. susan reached her hand out to have a closer look at a statue when the woman scolded in a loud tone, "no touchin' of the historical artefacts!!" ms. macready's eyes grew bigger and turned around dramatically. the boys chuckled quietly.
"and above all, there shall be no disturbing of the professor." she said, lowering her voice before disappearing behind a wall leading to a corridor.
the older woman assigned them a room for the girls and one for the boys. night came pretty quickly. as they were unpacking, the buzzing of the radio suddenly interrupted their peace, "german aircraft carried out a number of attacks on great britain last night. the raids, which lasted -" the man's static voice was stopped when susan turned the radio off. she glared at peter behind her, who turned it on in the first place.
little lucy's sniffles made them approach the bed where she was laying down on. "the sheets feel scratchy." the kid looked down while rubbing her hands against the cold blankets.
"wars don't last forever, lucy. we'll be home soon." susan tried to comfort her sister with her words and a smile.
"yeah, if home's still there," edmund entered the room. he wore a blue gown as well as lucy, both about to go to sleep
"isn't it time you were in bed?" the older sister asked tiredly as she turned to glare at him. he was always there to ruin the moment; their tolerance bottle was slowly emptying.
"yes, mum," edmund replied with a mocking voice.
"ed!" peter reproached. the youngest of the boys looked down with an annoyed face and sighed with his lips closed. "you saw outside, this place is huge. We can do whatever we want here." peter stared at susan and then back at lucy, "tomorrow is going to be great, really, " he ended and the little girl smiled at the oldest two.
