[the river]

𝐊𝐄𝐍𝐍𝐘 led the way with the pevensies and the beavers rushing right behind her. their breaths and throats were maybe just as frozen as the snow they stomped on while they ran towards the lake. through the next ten minutes, they sprinted, submerging in snow as they did so, their coats getting wet, their feet almost immobile, and thick, cold droplets of sweat slipped from the corner of their faces.

kenny felt her feet getting wetter every second that passed. she had her limbs almost asleep due to the cramps and the pain. they were so wobbly they felt like breaking and separating from her body. not literally, but they sure ached a lot.

the group was standing over a middle-height zone of the mountain; right on the border between the forest and the river, where they could look up to the frozen, white icicle cascade emanating from the upper part of it. this part of the waterfall was what actually preoccupied them. there were bigger, firmer chunks of ice insistently pushing the frozen water.

the temperature had started to rise without them noticing, melting the ice faster than they could design a plan the way kenny would have felt more comfortable crossing with her companions. but she had her hands full since the group arrived so she was slowly geting used to the rushing and the desorder. if they weren't quick enough, the ice would dissappear so soon they wouldn't be able to reach the other end within the next five minutes.

looking down they could see the frozen, lower part, where the water was supposed to crash and the firm ice floor was fragmenting into smaller pieces, flowing down the stream, making a cracking sound that did anything but help to calm their nerves. it was solid, but not stable enough to hold them for long.

"we need to cross, now!" peter exclaimed, gripping lucy's hand in his.

"don't beavers make dams?" the youngest questioned, thinking of a solution.

"I'm not that fast, dear" mr. beaver responded,

"even if he did, lu. it wouldn't suffice." there they were all in agreement, after a little thought. whether they did construct one, the biggest one, the water would still turn it over and destroy it effortlessly. peter pulled lucy to start going down the side of the cliff.

"wait! will you just think about this for a minute?!" susan exclaimed, and all the rest halted.

"the one thing we should do right now is act fast, we don't have time to think." kenny answered, she still tried to sound soft to not cause another misunderstanding with easly-offended susan.

"we don't have a minute!" peter answered, too.

the older girl felt attacked, "just trying to be realistic." her light-blue eyes stared in shock at her brother.

"no, you're trying to be smart." he spoke in a slower voice, "as usual."

at once, with the howl of a wolf, they went down the steps on one side to finally come face to face with the solid ice. peter helped the girls go down, receiving a thank you from kenny, despite her not needing his help. the wolves found them, that was evident. the sound of paws stepping on snow got louder by the second and they went on becoming more nervous.

peter and kenny tried to take a small step over the surface but the ice gave up as lightly as their feet touched it. the creaking of the ice rang against their ears and each of their eyes got bigger after seeing the solid surface sank as they slightly stepped on it.
