Chapter 16

Lying beside him on his bed I stared up at the ceiling lost in my thoughts for a moment.  I could feel his body pressed against my side and his chest rising and falling as his breathing sped up with each kiss he left on my body.  His hands started to roam over my skin gently at first then rougher as he noticed that I still had my eyes on the ceiling, on the dark grey duvet cover, on the slutty girls calendar above his cluttered desk, on anything but him.  He kissed me on the lips, forcibly gaining access to stick his tongue in my mouth and I had to control my gag reflex.

“What is wrong with you?”  He demanded grabbing my chin to make me look at him.  His brown eyes were smouldering with anger and the fresh bruise above his right cheek deepened as his face reddened.

“I’m sorry Cole I just don’t feel good today.”  I replied pathetically only half lying.  He stared at me for a moment studying my eyes before smiling at me.  I was in the clear.  The truth was I spent most of last night thinking about Jay then the rest of the night dreaming of Kale.  I couldn’t remember what happened in the dreams but I woke up happy.  That is until I phoned Cole to arrange to meet up.  After that I felt sick with guilt.  The realisation of what I was doing hitting me like a raging bull charging into my chest, leaving me breathless.  I was pretending to like someone to gain access to their life so I could get revenge for Jay’s death and because of that I was cheating on a great guy that I didn’t deserve.  I was sinking further into hell, hurting more and more people along the way.  That’s why tonight I am dumping Kale before I really hurt him and that’s why lying here on this bed with a guy that makes my skin crawl is so much harder than it usually is because I know that after tonight he is all I’ll have.  There will be no Kale to make everything seem better, to give me the best surprises.

“I know what will make you feel better.”  Cole said stroking my hair and smiling at me.

“What?”  I smiled weakly at him holding back the tears successfully by pretending that I could keep Kale forever.

“Some chocolate cake.”  He grinned picking me up in his arms and running out the room with me.  It was the kind of thing Kale would do so I grinned in response and put my arms around his neck, snuggling into his chest as he thundered down the stairs.  He finally put me down on a chair at his kitchen table then put a tea towel over the top of his arm as if he was a waiter.

“Madam.”  He said politely as he placed a plate with a huge slab of chocolate cake in front of me and handed me a fork.  He made himself up a plate too and sat down across from me.  He had these moments of unbelievable sweetness when you almost forgot all the moments where he was domineering and abusive and almost forgot who he was and why I was with him in the first place.

“Thank you Sir.”  I laughed back at him looking into his dark eyes.

“You’re welcome.”  He smiled boyishly before tucking into his cake getting some chocolate smeared on the corner of his mouth.  I tucked into mine, my empty stomach doing a celebratory rumble as all I managed to stomach before coming here was a coffee.  After that day I was over at his watching a film I have always kept my phone on silent so to not make him angry so instead of hearing it I felt it vibrate in my pocket and there was only one person that would be texting me.  Kale.

“Do you like it?”  Cole asked having demolished his slice in the time it had taken me to get through half of mine.

“Yeah it’s lovely.  Did you make it?”  I smiled at him as I licked the chocolate from my lips slowly, getting back into the character of Rose.

“Yeah.”  He smiled at me leaning over the table to kiss me on the lips so that I had more chocolate smeared on my mouth.  I licked it away before he could.
