The Witch Hunt: Part 1

"Sam!" Kate calls out, wading through the crowd just to get to the blonde who was too busy stuffing her locker to notice Kate.

"Hey!" Kate flicks her locker door shut with a sly smile, biting back a laugh at the way Sam practically jumps out of her shoes in shock.

It was the day before the witch hunt, Halloween weekend that riddled the halls with makeshift cobwebs and poorly made skeletons. Most of the students had already begun celebration, coming to school with shirts doused in fake blood (At least, Kate hopes it's fake.) and dollar store masks that smell like cheap plastic and acrylic paint. The halls were a little livelier, conversations a little less bleak as everyone came up with their own plans for the packed weekend. It was Kate's favorite time of the year, mostly because even in a room of people making an actual effort to dress up, she knew she still looked the best.

It does wonders for her ego.

"Hi? Maybe try not to give me a heart attack next time." Sam huffs, a hand on her heart as she slings her bag over her shoulder.

"Got your costume ready for tomorrow?" Kate wiggles her brows, leaning up against the locker next to Sam's with her books in her arms. Kate's cast was still on, only this time it was very badly riddled with Simon's doodles. At some point, she just got tired of fighting him off.

She plans to wrap it with cloth that would actually match her outfit for the witch hunt anyway.

"I do, Simon's been helping me all week. I'm gonna look like a fucking idiot." Sam sighs, shaking her head as Kate intertwines their arms and leads her down the gradually emptying hallway. It was a Friday; it wouldn't take long for the school to clear out.

"Oh Sam, nobody looks like an idiot on Halloween. The only idiots are the ones who don't dress up. Use it to be free, let your imagination run wild."

"Oh it's wild alright, borderline insane." Sam chuckles.

"Go big and never go home. So what are you going as?" Kate hums, looking at Sam with a smile that meant more than just pleasantries, but the mischief Kate hid goes right over Sam's head. She can be really slow sometimes, Kate thinks.

"Well because of that stupid game I got the Wizard of Oz theme so—"

"Wait! Don't tell me, I like surprises. Also, how are you and Deena?" Kate promptly cuts her off, a rush in her tone that finally sparks Sam's curiosity.

"I... Did she tell you something?"

"No but I have eyes, obviously. You two have barely said more than three words to each other all week. The awkwardness is really killing my mood, y'know." Kate clicks her tongue, and Sam visibly deflates as the memories of the clinic flood back in a flash.

"I said something dumb. She's hurt and... every time I try to apologize she says she's fine but I mean, you see it right? She hates me now. Plus she's like... never home anymore. It's so weird. I call all the time but even Josh is being weird, he just keeps saying she's out or something." Sam reveals somberly, with a sprinkle of irritation at her rampant speculation.

"Wait, Deena? Hates you? Don't be so stupid. It's just like... a lover's quarrel or something. She's stubborn but she'll get over it. Also, maybe she's just busy with her costume." Kate reassures as she spots Simon leaning against the door of the music room, the same mischievous glimmer in his eyes as he breaks out into an excited wave at the sight of Sam.

"Sammy! You ready for our big show tomorrow? We're going to fucking own the block with how cool we look." Simon exclaims as the two girls come to a stop right in front of him.
