16. 9.21. Kiaan usually came before anybody else in class. He had to drop his kid sister to junior school enroute his. Her classes started about an hour before his. So, he came in almost 45 minutes before the school began. He used this time to generally go though his lessons, re- check his homework. Sometimes he just looked out of the window and mused over things. A little bit of calm before the chaos of school began did him good. Helped his concentration in school. He was a focussed guy. Focussed about what he wanted to be in future.
He saw matters of the heart as a distraction. It took away his concentration and focus. He had seen it happen. So, he was irked by this new note thing as he was clueless about who was putting them in his desk. Honestly he was irritated by the way girls kept fangirling after him. It was not just his class girls but even girls from junior classes approached him with their silly giggly confessions. They pursued him around school. He had a couple of male admirers as well. But then he was not interested. His eyes were shut and he was mulling over all this when he heard the class door bang open. Kiaan opened his eyes to see one of his classmates enter the class. She was not one of the girls he was friends with. He had to wrack his brains to come up with her name. What was it ... ummm ... Tanya...Tanya Dixit. She was famed to be too high nosed and snobbish angrez type. His best friend Dhuv had told him this the day he joined. I think she purposefully uses tough english words to act pricy and give us inferiority complex. Sashi Tharoor ki female edition. Ek bhi hindi word bulvake dekh( make her speak one hindi word) he had said. With these words as the referral point Kiaan never really had the urge to talk to her. Not that his English was bad, rather his spoken english was very good. He spoke with his father's( who had lived abroad for a long time and kept going back often) American drawl. But he did not talk to her. Nor did she, like other girl's, make any attempt to talk to him. So, they remained strangers. Though her best friend Jessica Kharbanda was in amiable terms with him.
Generally Tanya was properly turned out. But today her appearance was rather messy and in disarray. Her hair wet and uncombed and it seemed she had just gathered it all up and tied it together in a messy pony tail. She wore her school uniform all right but she did not wear her tie. One end of the tie was hanging from her jacket pocket and she was wearing her shoes without her socks. It seemed she left home in a hurry. Kiaan was assessing her appearance with some surprise when their eyes met. She was agitated and angry for some reason but moment her eyes met with him they changed embarrassment. She touched her hair and looked away. Kiaan had opened his mouth to ask whether everything was okay with her. But just then Nyasa Deshmukh and Dhruv Kapadia entered the class. Nyasa and Dhruv were his best friends. The moment Nyasa saw him she yelled, "Kiaan, did you do your hindi homework?"
Kiaan nodded in affirmative." Jaldi se de,"( Give it to me fast) she urged. By the time Kiaan had given her his hindi copy and turned towards Tanya, she was gone. Next when she returned she was totally combed, dressed and collected.
Palash who sat right behind Kiaan called out to her when she returned." Mimi, aunty asked me to give you your ghar ki chabi(house keys). Catch." Saying this threw a key at her.
She caught it and turned angrily towards Palash, " I warned you against calling my petname in school."
" Sorry. Forgot. Accha, I also have your tiffin."Tanya walked up to his desk to take her tiffin when he said, "Don't fight with aunty so much. You left home in a huff. She was so tensed whether you reached school properly or not. Send her a message. Yeh le tera tiffin.( here, take your tiffin) It has halwa puri. I ate a bit of halwa and do( two)puris." (In India in most school childen carry lunch boxes which they call tiffin. Children eat lunch in their classroom itself. There are canteens where children can eat lunch for a cost. But then most children use it for buying an after lunch snack which they share and eat together. Indian kids generally sit together and share there lunch. The pshyche is they generally like polishing off other people's lunch than theirs. There are day boarding schools which serve lunch and breakfast. Also there are government run schools offering mid-day meals for BPL students also.)
" Greedy guts. And don't sermonise me, okay? She said snatching her tiffin box and walking away.
" Tujhe toh acchi bateh khapta nahi hai," ( You don't undertand good advice.)
" Mind your own business, Bobby," she told in her angicised accent.
" Mind your own business, Bobby," mimicked Druv, " Angrez chale gaye, par isse chor gaye." ( the English went away, but they left her behind.)
Tanya turned aggressively looking at Dhruv but then her eyes met with Kiaan before that. He was smirking at what Dhruv just told while eyeing her. Her eyes stayed on his smirk for a moment and then she turned and marched away to her desk.
She could not be the girl writing these notes, thought Kiaan. The one writing them uses too much hindi. Tanya Mimi Dixit was striked off from his shak-list ( shak means suspicion in Hindi). Mimi was a cute name though, he thought noticing her for the first time. He looked around once with the hope to spot the note girl. But it was the usual crowd staring at him while the others were busy with their chatting as if they met after years.
He then looked at his desk. He had resisted the urge to look inside. But now he did and sure enough there was a note.... the goddamed note, he thought as he opened it,
" Hi Ki(thatz my new nickname for you)
Kyun Ki?( why Ki?) Kyun Ki ( because) you hold the key to my heart. Dekha?(saw) same word two meaning. Gawsh! I am so intelligent. Phir bhi number aate kum, ( Still is get less marks)what to do. Sigh!
Anyway Ki, I don't get it. You threw her peonies and then went on a coffee date with her after school! Gosh! I was so jealous. How could you?"
Kiaan stopped reading. So, it was Amrita Pathak who left those flowers! That was silly. He turned and looked at her. She was talking to Ritu Kakkar who sat beside her. But moment he turned and looked at her. She stopped talking and looked at him and smiled rather sweetly. Kiaan did not smile back. He saw Amrita as a good friend and could not associate her with the peony girl. But then what was the guarantee this note girl was telling the truth. May be Amrita was actually the note girl, who knows. Kiaan went back to reading the note,
" but then you know what you both looked cute together. And anyway, you would never ask me to have coffee with you, even as a friendly gesture. So, it's okay I guess. You must be wondering how I know about this sneaky little coffee date. Well, she muploaded the ish in instagram soon after you left with the caption coffee with Kiaan. You looked so happy with her. Your smile said it all....Dil mein aaj kya hai...tu kehe toh mein bata du type smile. I think you like her a lot, hai na? Hai na? ( isn't it?)Why can't you like me a little bit.

Kiaan looked up again. His lips lifted a bit on the sides. But the curve was so negligible that it could not be officially called a smile.Note from author:
