"Is she okay?" Tara asked me quietly as Emily huffed into the office. I furrowed my brow.
"Not sure. She's had quite the morning."
Tara raised her eyebrows at me, concerned. "Oh? Are you guys okay?"
"Yeah. We're not having problems or anything, nothing like that. Just personal shit,"
"Right. Forget I said anything."
I got myself a cup of coffee later that morning and Emily met me in the kitchen. I put my hand on her upper arm and said, "Babe, you okay? There's practically smoke coming out of your ears." She smiled a little and stirred her own coffee.
"Yeah. We'll talk about it at lunch, okay?"
"Okay. Promise me you're alright?"
Emily nodded a little and showed me her beautiful smile. "I'm fine." She kissed my forehead briefly and went back to her office. JJ came in and snapped me out of my trance, taking my eyes off Emily.
"Earth to Karimova," she chuckled.
"Hey, sorry, Jayje,"
"No, you're good, just wanted to see if you're alright,"
"Yeah, I'm fine. Worried about Emily. She's had a morning,"
"Oh? Did something happen between you guys?"
"No. How come you and Tara both thought that?" I wondered. "Um, anyway, she's just got a lot on her plate these past couple days. I want her to relax,"
"I know. She'll be fine, though, Lina."
During lunch, I again sat in her office so we could talk privately. "So I'm assuming from your mood that your little coffee date with your mom didn't go so hot?"
She grumbled, "Not really, no." Emily was lost in her mind somewhere. "Sorry, love, I'm not trying to be rude. Just pissed. Not at you!" she added on quickly. I already knew this, but it was a relief to hear.
"I know. What happened that made you so upset, though, baby?" I took her hand and kissed it. "What did your mom say?"
At last my girlfriend sighed, ready to confess. "She asked if I was seeing anyone, I denied it 'cause I knew what she'd say, then she called me on it, so I told her I was dating someone named Galina. She assumed I was dating a man, asked where he was from, I explained that my girlfriend is Russian. Then she said a bunch of homophobic shit and, to top it all off, demanded to meet you. I told her no."
I raised my eyebrows as I took it all in. "Wow. Uh...wow, okay. Well, love, I know it was rough for you to do all that. But, and you might hate me for saying this...if you're okay with it, and your mom wants to, I'd be okay with meeting her,"
"What? Baby, no, I can't let you do that. She is awful—"
"I know, but Ems, do you want your mother in your life? At all? I'm not baiting you into an answer, I'm genuinely asking, love."
Emily took a moment to think. "I—I really don't know,"
"Well, to have any chance at that, would she want to meet her daughter's partner?"
Emily sighed and tried to dismiss my efforts with a shake of her head. "Galina, if you go through with this, you have to know she's gonna be homophobic and probably rude as hell to you,"
"So? I can take it. Listen, love, I just want you to be happy. I'll do anything for you, you know that. Give it some thought for me, okay?" A smile emerged on Emily's face, making me content.
Emily gave me looks of adoration as we went about our business. We got home at around 8, ate dinner, and laid on the couch, me atop her. I kissed her neck where my head was nestled.
Emily's chest rose and fell with her steady breathing. A blanket covered us, something I'd thought of several minutes prior. She ran her fingertips over my upper arm, back and forth, the only sign she was even still awake.
"My love," she whispered, "I really admire your conviction to meeting my mother, but you really don't have to do that. I would not wanna put you through that. So really, love, don't feel like you have to,"
"I don't," I replied, shifting my body a bit, "but I love you, and I want to. If you don't want me to, then I'll drop it, simple as that. You just tell me what you want, baby girl."
Emily smiled at the name and kissed the top of my head. "You're incredible, darling. We should probably go into bed, or at least I should. I'm about to fall asleep,"
"Okay, love. I'll come with you, on one condition..."
"That you meet my mom?" she asked with a grin.
"No, I was gonna say that you have to cuddle with me. Obviously." We both laughed and got up to get in bed. She wrapped herself around me, as if protecting me.
The next evening, I was showered with kisses as we got ready to go to dinner. "Em," I laughed, "let me put on my dress, baby,"
"Mm," she hummed between kisses to my neck from behind, "no...you look so pretty...in just your bra and panties..." She put her arms around my waist to trap me. "We could stay here, and I could make you scream my name," she suggested, taking a sharp sexual turn.
I laughed incredulously. "How about after we get home, pretty girl? Then my body is yours. Alright?"
"Fine," groaned Emily. She let go of me, kissed my head, and said, "I love you, angel," before commandeering the bathroom to do her makeup.
With haste, I changed out of what I'd been wearing before and into some lingerie I'd bought recently. Emily had never seen it, and I knew she'd love it. I put my dress on over it, checked myself out in the mirror, and joined Emily in applying makeup.
