She was blessed with a marriage lasting longer than her feud with fate
She loved a man already in love with a place she hates
The hell she lived in that tested her elastic heart
And her commitment to a love that tore her apart
Iris never loved the dirt of Virginia
And the vulgar lips of its crowd
An atmosphere that stole her pride
But she fought through to be a good wife
She would hunt all the pleasures
Like breaths in a stormy weather
She searched for those treasures
So they could stay together
She replayed what her mother would say in her mind
That marriage comes with a trade of sacrifice
But could Arthur even give her life
When he took her reason to be alive
Her soul was alive somewhere else
On a beach in the far west
It sent her letters to her address
And told her to leave this hell
Iris was willing to breathe the smoke
To see him breathe what pleased his soul
She buried her dream in her beach home
And lived broken to keep the love afloat
She lived in the farm of West Virginia to satisfy her man
She drowned her dreams away even when the want was bad
She lived in a place that ate her up all for a love that lasts
