1951 it has been 6 years since world war 2 ended everything has gone back to normal the fat controller announces that he will be taking his family on vacation and that he will be gone for awhile he is also hiring someone to look after them while he is gone
Meanwhile somewhere on the mainland on a place called toby's tramway a tram engine is seen doing work around the place while carrying his coach Henrietta the tram engine's driver is named Toby he has been working for many years his line is facing closure because of passengers taking buses rather then going in Henrietta
One day Toby meets a stout gentleman who is actually the fat controller his grandkids note that toby looks unusual for a engine fat controller's granddaughter even calls the tram engine electric which offends Toby leaving the fat controller to explain that Toby is a steam tram engine not an electric one Toby gives the fat controller and his family a ride the whole family is happy and the fat controller thanks toby for it over the next few days the Topham family returns to ride with Toby again until the day they leave the fat controller thanks Toby for a fun vacation they had and the family leaves
As time passes Toby is getting less and less passengers soon the inevitable happens and toby's controller shuts down the railway Toby is even given a farewell party Toby says that he will miss doing his job as he retires to his cabin
Meanwhile back on Sodor Thomas is taking some trucks while going to a road he is stopped by a police man who tells him that he is breaking the law by riding on the rails without any cow catchers this angers Thomas as he had never seen something like this before
Eventually the fat controller is called to see the
situation the policeman tells the fat controller that he will either have to give Thomas cow catchers or buy a tram engine Thomas suggests to the fat controller that he should buy a tram engine since he doesn't want to have cow catchers on him this comment reminds the fat controller about Toby
Fat controller:(wait! I have an idea!)
The fat controller writes to toby's owner about purchasing Toby and having him brought to Sodor toby's controller seeing no use for him gives him to the fat controller for free when Toby is told about this he is excited about this
A few days later Toby is brought to the island with Henrietta and the two begin working on the island this pleases the policeman and everyone is happy to welcome a new steam engine in their island all except James because of their old fashioned appearances James often calls them dirty objects but Toby gets back at him reminding him of when he needed to use bootlaces for his coaches this angers James and he runs away
One day James picks up a slow goods train while on Gordon's hill he is too busy thinking about what he's gonna say back to Toby this gives the trucks the opportunity to push him down the hill giving James another incident with the trucks
James:(not again!)
James eventually goes to Maron and crashes into some tar tankers getting him covered in tar
Percy and Toby see this and make fun of James
James is embarrassed by this having his red paint ruined again
Fat controller later gives Toby and Henrietta a new coat of paint leaving James in silence since he is now the dirty object
Later on in Thomas happens to be in Hackenbeck while pulling Annie and clarabel he spots a lady waving a flag at him he doesn't know why at first he soon finds out when he spots a landslide in front of him and manages to put on the brakes before he can crash into it
The next day Thomas Toby and the fat controller go to the lady's house to thank her the fat controller even gives her tickets to Bournemouth where she recovers from an illness that she had
Sometime later in 1952 Gordon is grumpy over the fact that he has to take a dirty goods train instead of the nice shiny coaches that he prefers later while Gordon is on a turntable he attempts to jam it but he ends up going into a ditch on accident leaving Edward to take the goods train Gordon remains in the ditch all day until it is night time when he is rescued finally but him refusing to take the goods train results in him losing the express
Later after a long and tedious wash down he begins to shunt trucks while James is ordered to take the express but James gets stuck on a hill leading Gordon to come to his rescue even though Gordon helped James he still doesn't get the express back
At Christmas time the fat controller decides to have a party in celebration of the lady who prevented Thomas from running into a landslide the Christmas party ends up happening at the house
The next year in 1953 Gordon is still sadden at the fact that he has lost the express and has to do goods trains now this is eve something that Thomas teases Gordon about and carries and even after Annie and clarabel rebuke him
Thomas then goes to the lead mines to collect some trucks and he passes a danger board and ends up going down the mine Gordon laughs about this when he finds out and he comes to rescue Thomas and on the way back the two form an alliance
When they get back they find out that the queen of England is coming to visit the island they wonder who will pull the express Edward is too old and Gordon is still prohibited from pulling the express James thinks he will be chosen but Henry disagrees saying that James can't climb hills Henry is chosen but paint then falls on him when he accidentally disturbs the painter the fat controller is left wondering who to chose to pull the express he ends up choosing Gordon to pull the express Gordon pulls the royal express and successfully brings the Queen to the island of sodor after this he is returned to pulling the express much to his delight
Later on in the year 1954 lots of big things happen one of them being that Derek Topham retires as controller of the railway and his son takes over after this edward's k2 is starting to show its age and the parts of it are deteriorating one day he is pulling cattle trucks and a cow runs into the train and break a coupling Edward doesn't realize it until he gets home this causes Gordon and Henry to laugh at him later on while Gordon is pulling the express when he is stopped by a cow Henry is as well both of them try to get the cow to move but to no avail then a porter arrives and uses a calf to get the cow to move to which it works Edward later makes fun of Henry and Gordon when they get home
Later on Edward is late since Thomas's passengers haven't arrived Thomas got sick so he is out of service for awhile leaving Bertie with his passengers when Bertie gets to the station he sees that Edward has already left this leaves Bertie going on a chase to get to Edward eventually he manages to catch up to Edward at wellsworth and explains everything Edward apologizes and leaves with his passengers safely on board
A few weeks later Edward tells Thomas that he is going to the scrapyard Thomas tells Edward that he isn't that old Edward laughs at that
While at the scrapyard Edward meets with a talking traction engine the traction engines name is Trevor he explains to Edward that he is going to be scrapped next week even though he is still clearly in working condition he then tells Edward about his old life Edward then decides to think of a way to save Trevor when he sees the vicar of wellsworth he and jem Cole trevor's former owner convince the vicar to buy Trevor the vicar the vicar sees Trevor and after seeing Trevor prove his worthfulnes he buys Trevor and Trevor goes to live at the vicarage orchard
Later on James is cross with Edward for being late and when Edward arrives he calls him old iron
Later on again James is shunting in the yard much to his annoyance when a bunch of kids come in his cab and knock him out
James:(what the)
When James wakes up he finds that he is tied to a chair the kids reveal that they tied him up and they are gonna start the steam engine he is in all because that hate him so they do
Thankfully Edward sees this and he chases after James to go and save him after a long chase Edward manages to wrap a hook around one of James's buffers and then Edward manages to get into James's cab unties James then James gets up and slows down his steam engine and Edward does the same to his they return to Crosby and Edward is rewarded James apologizes for his remark about Edward earlier to which James accepts the fat controller sends Edward to the works as a reward and the kids are arrested and disciplined by their fathers one
