I gaze down at the golden ribbons of flame as they flicker and crackle, illuminating my cold windswept face with a warm glow. The beach built fire casts rays of light over the sandy rocks. Shadows appear on the moonlit water. Becky and I have been here for hours, laughing and sharing jokes and stories. But now we have built a fire on the beach, and bought some marshmallows so we can have a feast before we create a plan on how to get home. I slowly turn a wooden stick over the burning embers, and watch as a sugary cushion of sweetness melts and turns to a warm golden treat. I sandwich the toasted marshmallow with two chocolate biscuits and slowly take a bite, savouring every taste.
As I enjoy it, I lie on my back happily, staring at the stars above my head. I feel a deep sense of happiness stirring within me, filling me up with the thought that if Becky and I hadn't come here, we may have never had another chance to experience this peace and contentment that I can tell we both feel at the moment. My peace doesn't last long though, as suddenly my fantastic view of the stars is blocked out by a huge black figure, turning the sky view into a dark sense of something forbidden.
"What do you two think you are doing here?" A rough voice rings through the air.
I tilt my head sideways and roll over. A tall shadowed figure towers above me, and the expression I can see through his bushy moustache and beard seems to be burning with rage. It's Mr Hallow, the headmaster.
"Um...we, we, well we were just..." I manage to stutter through my shock.
"Well? Are you two both aware that you have missed three lessons each!?" Mr Hallow growls viciously. He is turning bright red, and I can tell instantly that Becky and I are going to be in a lot more trouble than the Smith twins.
***
We trudge wearily back up the flowery meadows that seem dull in the mood of the day.
It's nearly midnight and I can think of no words to persuade anyone that we aren't in big trouble. Becky and I are dead silent, following Mr Hallow's retreating back. I feel a huge sense of guilt hanging over me like a cloud, and can feel students watching us through the Academy's windows. Word will have gone round now that two first years have been to the beach the whole day. We will be the talk of the school all month.
The last thing I see before Becky and I head towards the offices is the Smith twins staring at us in awe as we silently go by.
