CORAL
“Yo, I’ve heard there’s an island around here, just like 15 minutes away, it’s clouded by the mist and only demigods can see it” I said.
“Woah, holy shit that’s so cool, how do you know about it? I don’t remember studying about it in camp” Lilianah asked looking confused.
“Lils, you’re forgetting one thing, she’s the daughter of Poseidon, god of seas, creator of horses” Ciera reminded her.
“Oh right yeah” Lilianah said looking kind of embarrassed “anyway what’s the Island called ?”
“Nisí ton Pénte Fidión" I said “which means-”
“Island Of The Five Snakes..” Ciera and Lilianah said in unison.
“Indeed”
“That’s one hell of a cool name not gonna lie” Lilianah said.“I know right! Okay we’re here". I said as I closed my eyes and willed the island to show itself.
“It’s beautiful..” Ciera said as I opened my eyes. Before us stood an old abandoned island, hidden by my dad several centuries ago to keep the people from the dangers of the Hydra, it was almost as if we’d entered a whole different dimension, the sea stretched before us endlessly, the sand beneath our feet was warm enough that i could feel the warmth through my shoes, the sun was shining brightly, the clouds were like bits of cotton stuck to the sky, the scene was mesmerising, surreal too.
I took a deep breath, feeling the all so familiar smell of the saltiness of the sea hitting me, putting me at ease, as I exhaled I could feel all my pent up anxiety washing away like the waters wash away the shores.
“I’m home” I whispered softly. As I turned back to my friends I saw them smiling.
“What are you guys smiling for? Is there something on my face?” I asked, touching my face.
“No, there isn't’. It just feels good to see you forget all your worries even if it’s for a brief moment, the relaxation on your face puts us at ease.” Ciera said.“Damn Ciera, that’s deep” I said and she chuckled.
“So, what’s the story behind this island?” Ciera asked, looking curious.“Apparently, the Hydra, that had been slayed by Hercules, had regenerated, so my dad had sent it to this island, of course this island was also once a part of Greece, and sealed it to keep the people from the threat of the Hydra, but rumour has it that it was slayed by some other greek hero years later, so there isn’t anything to worry about” I gave them a brief information about the island “oh, and also my dad named the Hydra, Draco” i added laughing.
“Draco? Seriously? Reminds me of that guy from Harry Potter” Lils said joining in on the laughter.
“I know right?!?! I had a mad crush on him as a kid” I said.
“That’s one hell of a cool story though,” Ciera said.
“Let’s take a walk shall we? We’ve got some time” I said and they agreed. We walked for about 15 mins, talking to the fish and the hippocampi, well more like I did the talking because my friends don’t understand Fish language. They told me that they usually had to travel long distances in search of food, since this land was basically abandoned and a lot of fish and other creatures died of starvation and I assured them that I’d talk to my dad about this matter.
All of a sudden Ciera asked me “Uhhh, Coral? Are you sure this island is safe?”
“Yeah, of course, my dad took care of that”
“Then why do I see something moving towards us?” she alerted me with that sentence, I stood up and turned around to see a figure approaching us. It was covered with mist but it’s silhouette looked as if it had five heads attached to one body.
“Uh oh” I said
‘“Run?” Lilianah asked
“Run” I agreed and the three of us ran.Well, the problem here was that there was no place to hide, so we reluctantly had to stop.
“How the fuck do we deal with this?” Ciera said
“I DON’T KNOW?” I said
“WELL YOU WERE THE ONE WHO SAID THIS ISLAND WAS SAFE? TAKE THAT BACK RIGHT NOW” Lilianah screamed at me.
“YES I TAKE IT BACK STOP SCREAMING AT ME”
“GUYS! Stop fighting, we’ve got a bigger problem to solve here” Ciera scolded us.
“Okay yeah you’re right” I said as the Hydra stood facing us, ready to attack, it’s eyes gleaming with hunger.
“Well, how do we kill it?” Lilianah said
“Guess what Lilianah? I DON’T KNOW!” I screamed.
“Oh my gods, you’re useless”
“Okay, well i knew that”
“GUYS! FOCUS! How do we kill this thing?” Ciera said.
“Well.. Hercules had this gold sword with which he cut one of The Hydra’s immortal neck off, which was given by Athena, now since we neither have Athena nor her wonderful magical sword we’re gonna have to find another way” I said.
“Exactly, so how do we do it?” Ciera asked
“We charge, I guess?” Lilianah said and both of them charged
“WAIT GUYS NO!” I screamed as i watched them cut off the hydra’s neck.
“Why?” Ciera asked
“Because look” I pointed towards the Hydra who had started to sprout two more heads from the parts that were cut.
“The Hydra sprouts two extra heads if you try to cut one off,” I said, groaning. They looked at me horrified. “Why didn’t you tell us before?” Lilianah half screamed.
“WELL YOU DIDN’T LET ME FINISH” I screamed back
“Okay so how do we kill this thing? Coral?" Ciera desperately asked me once again. The Hydra hissed angrily and sprayed poison at us.
"WATCH OUT!" I screamed as the two of them dove out of the way.
"Don't let the venom touch you, or you'll melt" I said pointing towards the branch where it's venom fell watching it melt.We spent the next five minutes running away from the hydra and trying to distract it while I tried to come up with a plan to kill it.
"You kill this thing with fire. I remember that much. WHERE THE FUCK IS LEO WHEN YOU NEED HIM" I said out loud.
"Wait" I stopped in my tracks as I suddenly remembered something.Leo had given me something.
I remembered him clearly telling me "I'm just gonna give you one of these because it's dangerous, use it only if you absolutely need it."I frantically searched my bag for the pouch in which it was kept, I found it and when I finally opened it I sighed, relieved to see it was still there.
In the pouch in a tiny glass vial lay the most dangerous creation of the Greeks The Greek Fire."I'm gonna have to thank Leo for this" I said as Ciera and Lilianah ran towards me.
"Greek Fire?" Lilianah asked and I nodded.
"But using these will mean you'll have to destroy the island and what about the sea creatures" Ciera stated. Shit I hadn't thought about that.
I closed my eyes and said a quick prayer to my dad asking him to protect the people outside of this hidden island.
"Okay I drop this on the count of 3 and we run at full speed. Is that clear?" I said the they nodded.
"Okay. 1...2...3…" I counted and dropped the vial and ran.
I watched the fire swirl, engulfing the hydra in beautiful green flames as it screeched and writhed in pain and as soon as the fire started advancing towards the water, a huge sandstorm surrounded the island and the fire was put out in the matter of seconds but the Hydra was nowhere to be seen.
"WE DID IT!!" Lilianah screamed.
"Yup we did, but honestly I've gotta thank my dad, let's give him an offering shall we?"We threw into the sea a few of our eatables and watched it sink.
"It must've reached him. Let's get out of here before we face something else we don't wish to."
