December 1968
Seoul, South KoreaFelix silently jumped off their home's back fence, then ran as fast as he could to his and Jisung's secret meeting place.
When he reached the spot, he immediately noticed his friend waiting for him, which made him smile in genuine happiness.
"Jisung!" he whisper-shouted.
Jisung didn't fail to notice his friend's giggly voice, so he instantly shot a glance at the other, showing the same big smile as his friend.
Jisung waved his hands excitedly to the running Felix, and when they reached each other, they shared a happy embrace. "Merry Christmas!" they said in unison, making them giggle.
After that day, when Jisung and Felix sneaked out the horses secretly and accidentally broke General Lee's jeep side mirror, the two continued to meet secretly whenever they got the opportunity. Of course, they were extra cautious not to get into any problems. However, Felix has been getting tons of nagging from his father, but it's all worth it.
Why? Simply because, aside from having fun, the major purpose of their meetups is to piss the general off, and they are succeeding. Therefore, it was all worth it.
Felix has been making an effort to do all of his work ahead of time so that his father will still consider his unannounced trips and absence from a few important meetings. But of course, that doesn't change the fact that he's still on his father's bad side. He once even called the freckled boy a troublemaker, but Felix couldn't care less. He just wants to annoy his father because he doesn't want to marry Professor Hwang's daughter.
He never acknowledges the younger's concerns about the marriage; he simply wants the Hwangs as an alliance family because of their family background. Through their familial connections, the professor could provide assurance of their safety, especially for US servicemen against the North Korean soldiers. But none of those advantages matters to Felix since he places a higher value on his happiness than anything else. He can't just agree to marry a woman he hardly knows. Sure, the woman was nice and courteous, but Felix only sees her as a friend and nothing else.
"Aren't you spending your day with Miss Yeji tomorrow?" Jisung asked as they both began going to the outskirts of the city to ensure that no one would notice them together.
Felix merely hummed to his friend, uninterested in talking about it. He didn't want to hear the woman's name, but he instantly glanced at his friend when Jisung asked another question, "Did you tell the present boy about her already, Felix?" He asked.
Felix simply gazed at him before shaking his head and whispering, "No," causing Jisung to sigh.
"You can't just hide her from him; you'll marry the woman in a few months, and he has to know," the older of the two stated. He can't believe Felix; if his relationship with Minho is complicated, Felix's situation is far more so.
"I can't tell him; I don't want him to be upset because I'm marrying someone who isn't him; I vowed to wait; he can't know," Felix responded, prompting Jisung to stop walking. Felix cast a glance at his friend, and there he saw the latter's dissatisfaction.
"Wait for what, Felix? Wait for him? You're not even sure about him; this is insane," Jisung exclaimed, frustrated. He has always been supportive of Felix, but this time is just not the time.
"Why are you suddenly acting like this? I thought I already convinced you about him. He's a nice person, Ji-"
"I know, I know he's a nice guy, but Felix, do you even hear yourself? How are you going to wait for him? It's just impossible." Jisung stopped his friend off, agitated and concerned for the other. However, Felix's response took Jisung by surprise.
