Chapter 16

The bright sunshine creeps through the curtains on my window and wakes me up. I crawl out of bed, go to my window and look outside. Sunlight. Bright sunlight. This means that it must be summer already. So many months have gone by without my dream that I sort of just lost count. I go downstairs and see a sticky note attached to the front door, it reads: "Isabelle, I'm outside in the garden. Come join me, please. From Mom." I go out the front door and meet my mom towards the front of yard.

"Hi mom," I say quietly.

"Hello sweetheart. I'm happy you're here," she says surprisingly happy, "Could you tend to these flowers please while I run inside and get some lemonade for us?"

"Sure mom," I tell her as I start planting a flower. My mom runs inside the front door and closes it quietly behind her. A few minutes pass. Now I'm planting another flower.

"Isabelle?" I hear a familiar voice call in the distance. I look up and see a shadow walking towards me. I drop the flower and stand up to try and see who is walking towards me. Suddenly, this shadowed figure walks into the sunlight and I recognize him right away.

"Jeremy?!?" I hop over the fence and run towards him. Jeremy drops his suitcase and opens his arms. I jump into his arms and he swings me around. This feels like old time before he - wait. This is too good to be true. Am I dreaming again?

"Wait, wait. Jeremy, how are you alive?" I ask my older brother. He sets me down. I hear the front door open, Jeremy and I both turn our heads.

"Jeremy? Honey?!" my mom drops the platter of lemonade in her hands and runs over to us, "We thought you were dead".

"The enemy. They caught me and a few other soldiers. The other soldiers all died. I almost died, but the only thing that kept me alive was you two," he looked at each of us,"I didn't want you to lose another man in your life".
