Dean always heard stories about children losing their parents and ending up in an orphanage or foster home. But he never imagined that he would end up in that position, the night had started out normally. His mother Mary had accidentally burnt dinner so his father suggested they go out to eat instead. Being the teenager he was, Dean was moody about having to go anywhere and argued with his parents about it. During the car ride, he was mostly silent as his parents both told him he was grounded if he complained any further. Then out of nowhere it happened, the car slid off the road due to the rain, it ran into a tree and the car flipped.

Dean remembered feeling nothing but utter panic as he tried to figure out a way out.

"It's okay sweetie, " his mother said to him. After that everything went blank and he woke up in the hospital being told his parents were both dead. Frustrated and angry at the memory he threw a book at the wall as tears ran down his face. Normally fifteen years old refused to cry out of fear of being called a baby, but Dean couldn't help it.

"Excuse me, Mr. Winchester, I must speak to you," a red-haired woman said to him. He hadn't been in this foster home long but he knew that the woman's name was Anna. She was the foster mother and was going to give him the typical speech kids got during this situation.

"Just call me Dean please," Dean answered. He didn't want anyone to call him by his last name anymore, his family was gone and he was the last Winchester living.

"Dean it is then, because of tonight's unfortunate events you're now a ward of the state," Anna said to him, She didn't seem to feel bad about this almost like she had been through this multiple times and just didn't care. Her words finally hit Dean like a wave, he didn't have a family anymore and he was alone.

"Way to sugarcoat it," Dean huffed at her as he tried to hold back tears.

"I am sorry but there is no need to cry Dean, I am going to find you a new home and a new family," Anna said to him. "I'm sending you to live with my cousin Castiel. He will be taking care of you until I find a suitable family for you," Dean said nothing and only nodded. He wanted to yell and say that he didn't want a new family and that no one would want him because he was too different. But he was too worn out to even speak so he just went back to sulking in his chair. Dean had been told to start packing some clothes so that he could move in with Anna's cousin, while he did that, Anna had gone to call her cousin who had answered on the other end.

"Anna, are you sure about this?" asked Castiel. "You know what this family does,"

"I know, which is one of the reasons why I wanted to get out of it," Anna responded. "But this is serious Cass, Dean doesn't have any family, both his grandparents are dead, his parents are dead and he has no aunts and uncles," she continued "Trust me this is the only way,"

"Alright," Castiel said. "But I'm not going to have him exposed to this lifestyle, he's the type of people we have to protect,"

"Come by to pick him up around five," Anna said. Castiel agreed and Anna hung up, she knew that her cousin was worried. He had a right to be, Dean came from a different life and he wouldn't be used to the life that Castiel lived. Anna encountered Dean again who had all his things packed but now was crying. It seemed that his mind was still registering all that had happened. "Dean, do you need a tissue?" Anna asked him.

"No thank you, I'm fine," Dean responded, trying to sound tough. But it was a fruitless attempt since Anna already knew he was crying, she handed him a box of tissues and told him that everything would be okay. "It won't be okay, I'm all alone," Dean cried.

"You're not alone Dean, you survived for a reason," Anna said but her words only seemed to upset Dean more.

"Why would anyone want to save me?" Dean asked. "No one wants me, I'm too different," Dean told her. If someone had saved him, what reason did they have? Why did he deserve to live when his parents didn't? In heaven, Sam who was only fifteen in angel years watched as he saw Dean had been suffering. He wanted so desperately to go down to the mortal world and join him but he didn't think that it was going to work. Michael had noticed the young angel as he made his way over.

"Sam?" Michael said, causing Sam to jump, he turned and looked up to see his older brother, Michael checking up on him. "Are you okay?"

"Why is he so sad?" Sam asked instead of answering. "When can I go see him?"

"Once you are ready we'll send you down," Michael responded. "Right now he needs to get settled in with his new family and adjust with them," he continued. "Once he adjusts then that's when we know it's time," A couple of years later at the age of eighteen, Dean had already gotten used to his new family, however, he hated the last name, and even though it hurt him he wanted to keep his old surname. Castiel had been training Dean without his adopted brother realizing it, getting him ready in case something happened to their parents. They were at an archery range as Dean had been trying to learn how to shoot, he had picked up on it fairly quickly even though he still didn't understand why he had to do this. Dean aimed his bow and shot an arrow directly at the center of the target.

"Nice shot Dean!" Castiel said as he got up from the bench and made his way over.

"I still don't understand why I have to do this," Dean responded and looked over at Castiel.

"You will in time plus it's fun," Castiel said to him as Dean hit the target a second time.

"Hey you're right this is fun," Dean answered with a smile. He thought this was no more than a game and didn't realize that Castiel was training him to become a hunter. Dean was also unaware that both of his parents had been hunters but were trying to get away from that life. Therefore Dean never knew about it, so now he had to learn everything quickly. "Can I take a break?" Dean asked after he had managed to hit another bullseye.

"By break do you mean going into town to see your friend?" Castiel asked. He was completely aware that his foster brother snuck out a lot to go meet up with someone named Sam.

"What of course not," Dean lied looking everywhere but at Castiel.

"I don't like it when you make up stories Dean," Castiel responded crossing his arms. But he knew that saying no wouldn't change Dean's mind, he would just sneak away during the night. "Yes, you can have a break but be back soon,"

"Thank you," Dean said, running off before Castiel could finish.

"Teenagers," Castiel sighed as he picked up the bow and arrows Dean had left.
