That cold salty breeze had become ordinary. It was something that time had forced me to become accustomed to. I had stopped counting how many days, weeks, months we spent surviving on this beautifully tragic island. Patrick said that an entire year had passed, but it felt like longer. So much had happened since that fatal night. It all seemed so long ago.
"You place the seeds right in," I looked away away from the incredible view of the setting sun disappearing behind the wet horizon of the ocean and smiled.
Patrick was a gentle leader. Someone who was born with understanding and sympathy, but strong enough to follow. He was someone who could be headstrong at times, but capable of listening to reason when it benefitted us all.
"Who taught you how to plant crops?"Noah(Noah Franklyn Miller) asked, staring up at Patrick in amazement. Noah was still so young and impressionable. He looked up to Patrick more than anyone on the island.
"Your older brother," Patrick replied plainly. Noah's eyes fell to his hands with sudden sadness. The mere mention of William used to give Noah nightmares. The brother he had grown up with wasn't the same person he had once known.
"He taught me how to plant the seeds from the wild vegetables we found in the forest. After that I continued refining the skill to the point were I could make sustainable gardens," Patrick explained, pointing to the several gardens that had many ripening vegetables shooting up out of the ground.
Noah still didn't look happy. He didn't like constantly being reminded of what his brother had turned into. "Noah, how about you go find Jacob while I talk to Patrick. He should be out fishing," I intervened with a soft smile. Noah looked at me with a uncertain expression, then nodded his head and began walking passed the makeshift wooden huts towards the water.
"What do you think your doing? I was trying to teach him how to plant seeds," Patrick questioned pointedly. I ignored his forwardness and walked straight up to the tall boy.
"You could've done that without reminding him of his shitty brother," I replied. Patrick took a dramatic deep breath, exhaling whatever frustration he had pent up inside of him.
"I just want him to know that William isn't evil. What he did...he did it for reasons that are important to him," Patrick said, explaining his reasoning.
"Pat...murder is never okay. Him and that entire group of savages. I'll never forgive..."
"Hey! Calm down. There's no need to get all upset over something that we can't change," Patrick said, quickly placing the back of his rough and calloused hand against my cheek. I hesitantly reached for it, quickly pulling my hand away when I noticed Patrick looking down at me.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have..."
"No, it's okay. I get it. I'm not the one you chose," I said cutting him off.
"Alec, you don't have to keep acting like we're strangers anymore. I care about you too," he stated. My feelings wouldn't allow me to believe a word he said when it came to how he felt about me.
"I know, it's just...it's confusing Patrick...you're confusing," I admitted. I'm sure he understood how a simple comforting touch could be misconstrued as something more. Something that I hadn't even come to terms with.
