Seeing as it was only Maho, you felt your tense shoulders relax and your lips let out a breath you didn't know you were holding. "You're supposed to knock."
Maho arched her brow. "Girl, you had it unlocked."
You rolled your eyes, fully recognizing the fact that it was your fault you left the car unlocked. She put the grey shopping bag she was holding down on the backseat before sitting down beside it.
"Don't tell me you left the car open for like 30 minutes?"
You pursed your lips. "I actually just came back from the festival." The lie rolled smoothly off your tongue as you remembered the distinct sounds of fireworks that disturbed your perpetual sleep. You assumed that it was the Sanno festival which was celebrated in June and because you saw the huge banner that hung above the Torii gate that marked the entrance of a grand shrine.
"Didn't know you were interested in festivals—"
You weren't. You disliked festivals. You never attended one and you never participated in one. You also had no plans to do so.
"—Hey, where's the driver?"
She gave you a questioning look, wondering where on Earth could your personal driver be and why would he disappear out of nowhere. Very unprofessional, if you ask her.
"Mr. Driver suddenly had another business to attend to. Something about a relative of his here in Tokyo getting into a road accident or something." That was far from the truth, but you could care less as long as Madoka's in the dark about the true cause of his disappearance. You did not want to bother her with this predicament.
"Oh? I hope they're okay." Sympathy and concern were evidently shown on her face. She was indeed a thoughtful person, much in contrast to you. The way she was worried about someone she did not even know made you think of someone you once had the pleasure of being acquaintances with; a person whose birthday was today too.
"Anyway, what took you so long?" You lied again and asked her as if you didn't know the reason why she even went out in the first place. You had orchestrated this to happen, of course. You didn't want to let your friend see the gruesome fate of the man that had pretended to be your driver.
She scoffed and her eyes narrowed. "You told me you were first in line! You fucking liar, you had me waiting for 30 minutes!" She held up three fingers on her right and curled her left hand into a zero to emphasize the time she had wasted just to pick up the phone you had fixed. Indeed, you told her that you were first in line for picking up your order and that you couldn't get it yourself because you were tired as fuck. Madoka, being the good friend that she is, took it upon herself to fetch your phone out of the mac store and pay for it; using the cash you lent her, of course.
You merely mumbled a soft "sorry."
"What's with the festival?" She asked, deciding to drop her short-held grudge towards you as you started the engine. You were maneuvering the car that was just parallel parked a while ago while looking at your side-view mirror to ensure that you don't bump the other cars positioned behind you.
"Nothing much. It was boring," you deadpanned. The RX LEXUS 350 was now on the road with you driving it to your respective homes. The street lights gave a gleaming glow to the pavement that stretches in front of you. You could see there was traffic up ahead and so you sighed, frustrated at the fact you had to wait for the red light to turn green. You were very impatient just like some suburban dads who curse and yell at other drivers for driving too slow.
