At school on Monday, Bella was as nice as ever, although she seemed a little off. Was it me? Just in case, I wrote down the best chosen words I could think of and gave it to her. The words read, "You aren't mad at me are you? I'm sorry if you are. It's just...difficult."
Bella looked at me in surprise.
"I'm not mad at anybody," she said. "I'm just tired."
I felt much happier at that. School went okay that day, but on Tuesday something happened. When I got to school, Bella was already there. I was happy to see her, because I was anxious for more words.
"Hi," I wrote.
Bella took a deep breath.
"Megan you have to explain to me why you won't talk. I know you can, so don't say you have a disability or something," she added.
I took a few minutes to write down,
"Words are pretty and graceful. My tongue is not fit to hold the words. What if I were to speak my words in a dull manner like Mr. Gilbert? Or what if my words didn't have any colors or smells?"
Bella read through the words until the last part.
"Colors or smells?"
"Sure," I scribbled. "Don't you know what I am talking about? You see the colors and smells too, right?"
Bella looked at me for a moment.
"No Megan," she finally said. "I don't."
I frowned. I'd always thought that people could see the colors and smell the smells that went along with words, like me. What was different about me?
"Megan," Bella said suddenly and desperately. "Say something. One word. That's it."
I gulped.
"I can't," I wrote out. "It feels wrong."
Bella sighed.
"Megan please," she cried.
I showed her the same words I had before.
"That's it," Bella said, snapping her fingers. "I know what you need. Can you come to my house this Friday?"
I nodded. Bella grinned. After that, the week was a blur. There was nothing worth using any wonderful words to describe. Until Friday.
