"Why the fuck is there a chicken in here?!"

My voice boomed through the empty classroom as as I froze in the doorway, staring at a scene I never thought I'd witness.

I'd originally gone looking for Hendrix—dragging Bentley along with me—since we were supposed to be at some all-school meeting in the back. Instead, we walked straight into absolute chaos.

Bentley stood to my right, just as stunned as I was, while a chicken tore around the room like it had completely lost its mind. And right behind it was Hendrix, sprinting after the bird like a lunatic, clearly failing miserably at catching it.

His head snapped to the door, eyes wide as he stilled; hand against his chest as he breathed raggedly, sheepishly meeting our gaze. "Surprise!" He scratched the back of his neck awkwardly as the chicken rushed across his feet, darting between the walls.

I shared a look with Bentley who only reciprocated my 'what the fuck' look before we cautiously stepped inside, shutting the door behind us before someone could stumble across the scene.

"You idiot! Who—tell me who—decides to bring a chicken to school?!" Bentley demanded, completely bewildered.

"Heh," Hendrix sheepishly smiled, pursing his lips with desperate hope in his eyes.

The chicken bolted across the room again, shrieking at random intervals that made all of us flinch. "Stop moving," Hendrix scolded, pointing at it with the authority of someone who'd clearly lost his mind.

We stared at him like he'd completely snapped—and honestly, I was pretty sure he had. Sweat glistened on his forehead, his shirt clinging to him as if he'd been at this for ages. Every attempt he made to lunge at the bird ended with his shoes skidding across the floor. He was panting like he'd just finished a marathon.

"Well someone shut it up then —we got to go before we're late." Bentley waved his hands, groaning. "There's no way I'm going to be stuck having detention with Mrs Clinder for a week...again."

I muttered under my breath, cursing the fool in front of me for making me do this on my first week but I raced forward, trying to catch the chicken off guard and lunging for it. Unfortunately, the damn chicken managed to swerve and shrieked, instead sprinting in the opposite direction.
