Chapter 3

65 20 7

Marigold woke of the sound of rain pattering on the lush leaves of the rainforest. She rolled over with a grunt, as her older brother, Quartz, jumped on top of her with a huge grin on his face, as always. "Time to wake up!" He ducked as Marigold flashed a talon past his face. The unusually coloured NightWing was a copper colour. Marigold sighed glumly and hopped out of bed. Silly Quartz. Why did you have to wake me so early? "I heard that," growled Quartz. Marigold rolled her eyes. "I forgot you were a mind reader too," she groaned.

"Ahh, well, time for breakfast anyway." said Quartz, walking out of the woven door. Marigold grumbled quietly to herself before following him. Bright rays of sunlight greeted them. Marigold shielded her eyes from the sun.

After finally eating their breakfast, they heard a loud alarm call from a toucan. Suddenly, a dragon came crashing through the undergrowth. Marigold recognised the RainWing, Amazon. Amazon gasped for breath while Marigold and her brother waited patiently. "The queen...has requested...a meeting with the whole tribe," Amazon panted, after she finally regained some of her breath. "At the arboretum."

"A meeting with the tribe?" echoed Quartz. Yes, melon head, that's what she said. Marigold almost laughed in her head when Quartz threw a furious look at his younger sister. "All right, we'll be there," said Marigold, speaking for them both. Amazon nodded and flew quickly through the thick canopy of the rainforest.

Quartz turned to Marigold. "Doesn't it seem unlikely that Queen Tropical asked for a tribe meeting? Isn't it unlike her?"he questioned suddenly. Marigold tipped her head and tapped her claws thoughtfully in the sticky mud of the rainforest. "Yeah, I suppose it was really important." Quartz was right. Queen Tropical rarely ever called a tribe meeting. There probably hadn't been a tribe meeting since the time of Queen Baobab. The last Queen was strict, always called tribe meetings, and defended the rainforest from everything.

A sudden pain in her head distracted her. She made a choking sound and thudded to the rainforest floor. "Marigold!" Quartz screeched. "Are you okay?" "Yeah, I'm fi-" Marigold broke off with a gasp. She suddenly began speaking in a voice that wasn't hers.

Beware the snow warriors

Beware the magic in the darkness and ice

Beware the dead of the night

She will wield power and destruction in her soul

Phyrria will crumble under the talons of the dying star

Under fire and ice

The mountain cat will save the land

Marigold gasped out the last sentence and Quartz raced over to her, where she lay crouching on the forest floor. "What was that?" He gaped at her. "It was your first prophecy, right?" Marigold nodded. "I think so, what do you think it means?" Quartz tapped his talons together thoughtfully. "We'll discuss it later. Now we have to go to the meeting."

Quartz and Marigold flew slowly to the huge arboretum where most of the RainWings were gathered. Queen Tropical was standing on a low platform that had been there since the time of the Legend, Queen Glory. The ancient Queen was the first queen to rule both the NightWings and the RainWings. She had saved them from their old home, the volcano. Marigold had read about Queen Glory  in scrolls. Apparently she was a stolen dragonet from the War Prophecy. Marigold sighed. She had read way too many scrolls about the Queen Glory of the RainWings and NightWings. It was required reading in school.

Queen Tropical's voice broke into Marigold's thoughts. "Attention, RainWings!" Everyone turned towards her. "My scouts have reported that there is an atta-" A loud screech cut off her voice. All the RainWings and NightWings automatically turned towards the screech. All the dragons around her were taller than her, so she had to fly up to see what the commotion was.

There was a small RainWing-IceWing hybrid called Glitter. Glitter was a dragonet, but she sneaked around stealthily, like any common thief. Queen Tropical glared down at her. "Is there anything you would like us to know, such as why you were yelling in a tribe meeting?" Glitter cowered, throwing her wings over her head. "I'm sorry," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Good. Make sure you don't do it again." Queen Tropical stormed back to the Royal Platform. Marigold let out a breath she didn't know she was holding. At least Queen Tropical was more fair, and didn't punish her tribe that harshly.

"Well, anyway, as I was saying before that interruption, there has been an attack in one of the fruit gathering areas, close to the NightWing village. Two NightWing soldiers were killed in the attack, one RainWing while fruit gathering. All the others that witnessed the attack said that it was a lone IceWing-NightWing killed them with their frostbreath. "Male or female?" Someone in the crowd called out. "Female," Queen Tropical replied promptly. "We need to guard our territory, increase patrols in that area, because this hybrid is dangerous. Do you understand?" All the RainWings and NightWings nodded. "Yes, your majesty."

Just as everyone was flying off, a huge dragon crashed through the undergrowth. She wasn't a RainWing, that was obvious, she was a mostly white with some black scales under her wings and deadly spikes on her back. The IceWing hybrid looked up, her eyes were dark blue and threatening. "Get out of here, right now," Queen Tropical growled. "What if I don't?" The IceWing hybrid asked boldly, cocking her head. "Then you're dead, because I'm not scared to use my venom." The queen glared at the hybrid. The IceWing-NightWing hybrid dropped her gaze. "Okay, I'll leave, but I promise... I'll be back."
