Quartz stared at Lynx in horror. Did he hear her right? She was Nova's sister? Quartz shook his copper head in disbelief. No way, his mind thought. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Marigold looking as disbelieving as he felt. She was related to the enemy!

Lynx looked sharply at Quartz. "What are you not telling me?" She took a threatening step towards him. Tell her the truth, Marigold whispered to him in her brain. Quartz took a deep breath. "Come on," snapped Lynx.

"So, uhh, it's like this. Umm, your sister, has been, umm, murdering RainWings that are on patrol in the territory," started Quartz and Lynx leaped backwards in dismay.

"No! Nova would never do that!" cried Lynx, horrified, her eyes darting all around her.

"Well, she did," muttered Quartz angrily.

"I don't believe you," stated Lynx.

"Believe what you like. I'm telling the truth."

Marigold looked up at them. "It doesn't mean that if she was killing the RainWings, she's evil though," she said slowly.

Quartz turned on her angrily. "What?!" He exploded. "Why else would she be killing innocent RainWings then? Name me one situation. RainWings aren't exactly dangerous, they're thought to be lazy, and they don't even care about other tribes!"

"Hey," protested Marigold. "RainWings are dangerous! They have venom and camouflage, and they are not lazy. Don't forget I'm half-RainWing!"

"Sorry, but how could you—how could you even think that Nova isn't evil?" That's not possible! Marigold taking the side of the enemy! His hateful thoughts flashed through his mind before he remembered that Marigold was also a mind reader.

Marigold reeled, shocked and hurt. She gasped. "Y-you don't really believe that r-right?" she stammered. "Yes, I do!" Quartz retorted. "I'm not with the enemy!" Her words flew out of her mouth before she could control them.

"Enemy?" questioned Lynx suddenly. "What, do you think Nova is the enemy?"

Everyone was deadly silent for a moment. Yes, of course Nova was the enemy, thought Quartz. Why would she do that though? another part of his brain whispered. Marigold sighed. "I'm sorry, Lynx," she said. "But yes, I do think that Nova is the enemy."

Lynx stared at them, evident sadness in her blue eyes. "I'm sorry, too," muttered Quartz, after Marigold flashed him a look of annoyance.

Quartz turned and began to walk away from Marigold and Lynx. He needed time to think alone, without a certain dragon reading his mind. She didn't seem that hostile, he thought. But that still doesn't change the fact that she came looking for her sister, our enemy.

He started pacing worriedly near some sharp rocks. How could we trust someone like that? How do we know she isn' working for Nova secretly and has come to spy on us? Blizzard said that Nova was an assassin, so we know she's dangerous, but why doesn't she come after us herself? He stopped pacing, and turned back towards where Lynx and Marigold were quietly talking together. No harm in trying, he thought. Maybe we could trust her for a while.

Quartz slowly went back over to Marigold and Lynx. They were looking at him expectantly.

"All right," he announced. "Lynx can travel with us for now," he continued. "But," he added, glaring at Lynx, "I will make it clear that I still do not trust you." There was a pause where no one spoke until Lynx finally dipped her head in acknowledgment, although she looked a bit suspicious. Hmm, he thought, narrowing his eyes at her. I'll figure her out.

Quartz took off and began to fly towards Jade Mountain. The mountain seemed closer than before, yet still so far away. We'll make it, he convinced himself.

At least, I hope we will.
