The sky was calm and blue. Marigold breathed deeply, enjoying the calming scents of the earth outside the rainforest. The sun was still shining brightly in the sky. They still had a long way to go before the sun set. "We need to get to Jade Mountain, today," she said worriedly. "Calm down, Marigold, we have heaps of time. If we wanted to, we could even stop now and continue later, as we have enough time," Quartz assured her, stretching his wings wider and gliding smoothly in the wind.
Marigold sighed and she stretched her tired wings to catch the wind currents. The wind was stronger today, it might even carry them to the Claws of the Clouds Mountains, where they could stop to rest for a while. After a few hours of flying, her aching wings couldn't hold her up any longer. She flopped to the ground tiredly, hearing Quartz's wingbeats land beside her. "I'll guard for the night," he told Marigold. Marigold stared at him in surprise. "We're not in the rainforest anymore," he explained, "we have to watch out for ourselves." Marigold sighed and closed her sleepy eyelids, letting the blackness of sleep engulf her.
Marigold yawned and curled up tighter in a ball. She could feel Quartz shaking her, trying to arouse her, but she felt so tired. "Marigold!" Quartz's patience finally ran out. "We have to go, if you want to arrive soon!" Marigold blinked open her eyes and stared at him. "Go where?" She asked. "Jade Mountain!" Quartz snapped irritably. "Don't you remember anything?" In a flash she realised where she was, and all the events of the day before, her creeping quietly out of the rainforest, her wings giving way until she fell to earth the ground, too tired to keep going, and falling asleep in a dreamless slumber.
Quartz took a deep breath and dipped his copper coloured head. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have been angry with you," he apologised. "That's okay," Marigold said. "I forgot what happened for a moment." They set out to fly to Jade Mountain where they would discover what Marigold's prophecy meant.
They flew constantly for hours, until they finally reached the foot of one of the mountains in the mountain range. "Keep a lookout," warned Quartz cautiously. "Anything could be here." Marigold shivered at his ominous words.
Suddenly, a wing length ahead, the earth fell into a steep gorge. She could have slipped down and died before she could even spread her wings to fly back to safety. Marigold took a step back, terrified. Quartz was right; there were many dangerous things here in the mountains that no one knew about.
They walked through the mountain range, careful not to get spotted, as they were in enemy territory. Quartz kept one eye on their surroundings, so they knew how to get back without being spotted while flying. They could have made it to Jade Mountain before night fall, but because they were walking, it would take much longer than that. The journey to Jade Mountain was going to take a long time, determination and effort. But the siblings were up to the task.
