Chapter 1

Quartz stifled a sigh as he stared glumly at his history homework. The scroll was slightly burned at the edges. More homework, he thought. I'll complete it in our family hut. Each RainWing family had a hut made out of vines and weaved leaves. The families maintained these huts and slept in them.

The copper coloured dragonet flapped through the thick trees of the rainforest towards his and Marigold's hut. He was grateful that the RainWings took pity on him when his parents abandoned him in the rainforest and let him live in the rainforest, but he sort of wished he knew his parents. All he knew was that they had left him in the rainforest. He didn't know why. One day, he would find them. They were sure to welcome him back, right? It wasn't as if he was a stranger to his lost parents.

Quartz sighed again as he entered the vines that covered the hut entrance. He was really grateful to Marigold for protecting him when he first came into the rainforest while others just stared at him suspiciously and ignored him. The NightWing sat down at his wooden table inside his family hut and started his really long scroll of homework. First question, what year did Queen Glory start ruling the NightWings as well as the RainWings?  5012, he busily wrote. Next one, he thought. Who was Queen before Queen Tropical? That one was easy. Queen Baobab. Quartz wrote that down quickly.

Suddenly there was an invasion in his thoughts. Someone's coming by, he realised. It had a sharp mirror feeling, unlike the calm feeling of a RainWing. Whoever it is, it isn't a RainWing. But I can't hear anyone, so whoever it is, they're not telling the RainWings. Quartz strained to listen to their thoughts, but either they were too far away, or his powers weren't fully developed yet. Something seemed to tug his head upwards. Maybe it's my mind reading powers telling me that they're up there?

It seemed unlikely. The invader would have been spotted before reaching the RainWing village. Unless there weren't any guards to guard the village. That theory seemed more likely. They were all having their sun time now, so there weren't any guards. That means the invader knows RainWings well enough to know exactly when they have sun time, he thought.

As the copper NightWing hybrid finished his homework, he couldn't sense the dragon anymore. Maybe they've left, he thought, relieved. He walked out of the hut, trying to find his hybrid sister, Marigold, to see if she had sensed the new dragon. He found her playing happily with some other dragonets her age. Quartz didn't want to interrupt her happiness so he walked away, hoping for time for his thoughts alone. Marigold saw his face and came up to him.

"What's wrong?" She asked gently studying his expression.

"Nothing"s wrong," Quartz stared at her in surprise. "I was just going off to think."

Marigold looked at him skeptically. "Not likely, your thoughts definitely don't relate to going off to think."

"All right." Quartz finally gave in.

"I wanted to talk to you about a presence I felt in my mind, like there was someone there, but I didn't know who it was. It could just be someone passing by that I don't know. Maybe another mind reader. There are lots in the NightWing tribe. But they didn't have the mind of one. They had the sharp mirror feeling of an IceWing."
