Saturday came and Phoebe was giddy for the fall festival that night. Phoebe wasn't sure what to expect as she hadn't ever attended a fall festival before.
They planned to meet Jonathan there, who was in charge of the festivities. He had been quite busy most of the day with preparations. Chace was at his Mom's farm for the day but they both promised they wouldn't miss it for anything. Sophie, Phoebe, Katie and Uncle Mark packed into his car and headed into town.
The brightly lit ferris wheel could be seen from miles away. Sophie took a big gulp and Phoebe screamed with enthusiasm, " I am going on that!"
Mark looked in his rear view mirror to see Sophie turning varying shades is green. He knew how much she disliked carnival rides, especially the dreaded ferris wheel.
One summer they had tagged along with their mother, Alona while she mascaraded as a fortune teller at a fair. It was a unique summer with various characters but Sophie could never get over her fear of the ferris wheel. It didn't helped that the guy who operated it only had one hand to which he said was a result of a ferris wheel incident. He left out the part that he was usually drunk when he operated it. From that day forward it wasn't so much the fear of heights more of the instability of equipment that was repacked hundreds of times along with the poorly trained operators.
"It's really high up Phoebe. Are you sure you are big enough to do that?" Sophie nervously asked.
"Oh yes! I love being on top of the world."
Sophie was praying she would be easily distracted one there from remembering the ferris wheel although it seemed unrealistic as it was a lit up monstrosity.
Jonathan met them at the gate allowing them to slip right past the long line. Just as the local celebrity was coming in from his own secret entrance to avoid the crowd as well.
"Hey Mr. Chace!" Phoebe buried into his chest.
"Hi, Darling!" Pam, Chace's Mom, gave Phoebe a loving pat to her head. "I have something for you." Phoebe's eyes lit up as Pam dug in her back pockets and pulled out a few dollar bills for her. "This is for the games. You better win something BIG!" Pam smiled brightly.
"Thank you Mrs. Pam!" Phoebe exclaimed.
"You are very welcome, my favorite young lady! I'm going to enter my pie into the contest. I'll catch up with you guys later." Chace nodded as Pam waddled off.
Sophie's heart warmed seeing how affectionate Chace and his family were towards Phoebe.
"A pie contest?" Sophie was continuously surprised by the small town quaintness.
"Yah, heard they got a famous judge this year too," Chace winked at her as he bounced on his heels.
"Are you going to be able to be impartial as the son of one of the contestants, " she asked, pretending to be accusatory.
"Of course! I am a man of honor, but also my Mom wins every year. She is the best." Chace beamed with pride. Chace's portrayed Hollywood image was this rowdy bachelor but truly he was a family man and that was becoming ever more evident to Sophie. She still had her reservations though but the more time they spent the more she was feeling at ease.
Wanting to divert attention away from "The Chace Show " Jonathan interrupted. "Wanna head over to the games first?" Jonathan asked.
"Games?! Yes!" Phoebe cheered.
Jonathan led them to the first game which of course was the sledge hammer and bell. Jonathan looked at Chace and an unspoken challenge was accepted.
