Chapter Fourteen
I’m on my way to a coffee shop. I’m tired. It’s 9:00 AM. I slept at 4:00 AM. I sighed.
‘Wait here I’ll go order you a coffee.’ I tried to smile but I couldn’t.
‘Thanks.’ I said to Ethan. I decided that I’m definitely not a morning person. It took a while before he came back with a coffee cup as big as my face.
‘Whoa.’ That was all I could say.
‘I know right, and it was really cheap.’ I smiled. ‘Ah, there’s the smile.’ He pecked me on the lips and we kept walking. Where were we going at 7:00 in the morning? Well, I had rehearsals for the show; they wanted to see how everyone’s speeches were going. Too bad I didn’t have one.
When we arrived the area was already full of people and a lot of people with cameras. There were all sorts, Polaroids, digital, Nikons, canons.
‘Hi you must be Kayla.’ A young lady smiled at me. She was wearing typical work clothes. It was a tight pencil skirt with a white collared shirt and a black blazer with black heels. She looked very nice though with her blonde hair tied back messily and her hazel eyes. Subconsciously I looked back to Ethan to see if he was checking her out but he was just looking around the place. I smiled.
‘Yes I am, and you are?’
‘Oh sorry, I’m Trish. Nice to meet you.’ She smiled and extended her hand; I shook it.
Trish led me around the place and told me where I would be sitting and where my parents and Ethan would be. She gave me a program and explained how the show was going. Finally she asked me if I had a speech. I smiled shyly.
‘Actually I was thinking of just improvising on the night.’ Her eyes widened.
‘Can you do it?’
‘I can.’
‘Are you sure? Cause the most famous photographers and companies will be here and I really don’t want you to mess up. Not that you would, I’m just worried …for your sake.’ She smiled.
‘It’s okay, I’ll get into it and when I get into it my mouth flies.’ She laughed.
‘Alright.’
‘Oh but there’s one problem.’ Her eyes immediately turned worried.
‘What?’
‘Tell me what we’re meant to talk about.’ She laughed.
‘Talk about yourself, your photograph and your inspiration. Just stuff like that.’
After three hours of preparing and meeting everyone from the magazine I finally got some time to spend with Ethan. My parents didn’t come, they said they wanted to explore New York by themselves and that they trusted us to be home or at the hotel before dark. Ethan smiled when he saw me coming towards him and grabbed my hands.
‘You done?’
‘Yeah.’
‘Thank god.’ He pecked me on the lips and passed me a coffee as I laughed.
‘You know just what makes me happy.’ He wiggled his eyebrows.
‘You know it.’ I sipped my coffee. ‘So what do you want to do?’ I shrugged my shoulders. ‘Nothing?’ I shook my head. ‘No ideas?’ I shook my head again. ‘At all?’ I gave him a look that said STOP ASKING ME and he chuckled. He took my hand again and led me around corners and streets and finally we ended up in front of a building.
‘What are we doing?’ I raised an eyebrow at him.
‘Just come and see.’
We took a lift up 36 levels and ended up on a floor full of shops. I frowned. He better not take me shopping. And luckily he didn’t, instead he pulled me around all the shops to the stairs. I was completely curious. We hurried up the stairs. And guess where we were? On the roof, I smiled at the completely cliché scenario. I loved heights, maybe he knew but he pushed me all the way to the side of the building and made me look down. And down there, way, way down written in big white letters on the grey concrete was ETHAN RAIN + KAYLA FROST FOREVER. I laughed and kissed him, deeply and passionately. Instead of carving it on a tree we have made our mark on the streets of New York.
In the middle of eating our hamburgers I asked.
‘When did you even do that?’
‘During the three hours you were distracted.’ I took a bite of my burger and gulped it.
‘Ethan?’
‘Yeah.’
‘I love you too.’ His eyes widened.
‘MIFLLY?’ I chuckled as he tried to speak with half a burger in his mouth.
‘Really.’ He forced the whole thing down and kissed me.
‘I love you more.’
‘You wouldn’t know.’ He smiled knowing I was right.
