Chapter One

One of the dresses fell to the ground as she shuffled her way into another, I don’t know how she does it in that teeny little space but she has managed to surprise me quite a few times already. I heard a swish of the curtain and begged this dress to be the one. She stepped out of the change rooms and with the dress tightly fitted, it showed her perfect figure, she put her hand on her hip and stared at me intently as I screwed up my face.

‘Kayla please tell me you like this one!’ her face and tone showed that she was obviously annoyed but I couldn’t help teasing her just a little.

‘This is the one’ I stared at her in admiration and twirled my finger. As if she were a puppet she twirled almost immediately. The dress was a shiny black, the bow on her back made her waist look even skinnier but healthy skinny.

‘Faye, I’m being absolutely serious, you look so good in this dress, it’s not even funny!’ I put on a complete serious tone and even raised my eyebrows, though she never fails to crack up when I’m being serious. When she finally got out of the dress we went to the counter to pay for it, and it was expensive, very expensive.

‘$250 for a dress Faye, seriously, I know you got cash but no need to rub it in my face!’ I laughed and she smirked, we played these games often. She’s the rich and I’m the poor but it doesn’t matter to us since we get along so well and plus we both do well in school, no trouble at all.

‘Well we need to go find you a dress now, it’s our year 10 formal, you have to go! We're going to be the hottest at that formal and you need to cooperate!’ she winked and I couldn’t help letting out a small groan. I hated buying new clothes, I could never be bothered to change then re-change then change then re-change, etc. Faye almost ran when we caught sight of her favourite store, Forever New.

‘Whoa, Faye, take a chill pill!’ I could hear her panting once we stopped. But she didn’t rest; she went straight in and picked around 50 dresses for me to try on. She pushed me into a change room and like a robot on commands I started changing.

‘Jesus Kayla, I know you hate this but hurry it up a little!’ I ignored her, I’m going to make her wait. Suddenly my vision started blurring, I moved my hand straight up to my head and fell to the floor with a slight crash.

‘Kayla? Kayla! Hey are you all right? Kayla?’ I didn’t process her questions and screams as fast as I should’ve but I did after a slight pause.

‘Uh, yeah don’t worry Faye, I just slipped on your heap of dresses’ I tried to laugh it off but she was seriously worried.

‘Your not hurt anywhere right? Right Kayla?’

‘Nope, I’m fine’ it was an obvious lie but she seemed to have bought it. My head still hurt but it’s probably just from all the shopping, I’m probably not used to it since I don’t shop often. I was just about to ask Faye if she has this but I decided not to bother her. My head stopped pounding after a while and we decided on a dress, she said it looked amazing but I didn’t really care so I just listened to her opinion cause her opinions are always more accurate then anyone else. I got out my wallet and was just about to pay but Faye moved quicker and swiped her credit card.

‘Faye, what are you doing?’ I eyed her back suspiciously and she knew it even without facing me.

‘Why what do you mean Kayla, I didn’t get you a birthday present this year, did I?’ I could just imagine that smile creeping onto her face.

‘FAYE! It’s over $100 that’s too expensive for a birthday present!’

‘Oops, too late to argue! Already paid’

‘I’ll pay you back, I promise’ I looked down, I felt so guilty cause we both knew this wasn’t true I could never pay back all those things she’s bought me, never, ever!

‘Yeah, yeah, I know’ she grinned but not at me just in front of her, at all those past times I’ve said that.

I winced and both my hands on my head and crouched. The pain was excruciating, I felt like I was going to pass out but just before I did I saw the concern in Faye’s eyes, her panic, her desperation to find her phone and the feeling of the cold ground hitting the side of my face.

I woke up in the hospital, white everywhere, mum crying, dad comforting her, Faye holding my hand, bedside drenched with tears, mum shocked staring at me and dad running, blackout.

I woke up in the middle of some kind of examination, doctors, mum asleep looking tired, Faye nowhere to be seen, doctors all around me gathering, the sound of my breathing, wanting to scream but no sound coming out, excruciating pain, blackout.

This time I woke up screaming because of the unbearable pain, scared the freak out of my parents and doctors, I started thrashing with no control, the doctors gave me a shot of something and I instantly calmed down. The doctor started saying something about tumours, cancer, and brain but at that moment I still couldn’t relate them because there was something fuzzy in my ears, eyes and head. Though somewhere deep inside I knew what it was, brain cancer, brain tumours, and everything was happening inside me.
