Iev is sitting in the stylist's chair, furiously scribbling with her pencil. I wonder what goes on in that head of hers. She has been transferring thoughts to paper since we came in to see Jo-Dee maybe thirty minutes ago.
'Sit up for me sweetheart.' Jo-Dee requests of Iev. Iev straightens her back and lifts her eyes up to the mirror in front of her to look at Jo-Dee.
'I'm sorry...' Iev tucks her pencil into her notebook and apologizes for her slumped posture. Jo-Dee just smiles and continues running her comb and fingers through Iev's hair. 'Kat says, I should pay attention tuh people.' I can't help but smile at her statement. She seems to hang on Kat's every word.
'It's okay sweetie, you can continue with your writing.' Jo-Dee says with a wink at Iev through the mirror.
Iev looks around in the mirror. 'Dom?'
'I'm right here Iev,' as I pop my head into the reflection, giving her a wave and a smile. She returns with a soft smile of her own, reassured of my presence.
'You both have hair for days.' Jo-Dee shares as she peeks at the both of us in the mirror. Jo-Dee had already done my hair in a French braid and now it was Iev's turn. Iev apparently loves French-braids and volunteered us both to get our hair done.
'I think Iev has got me beat.' I confess.
'Well, Iev's hair is certainly thicker...but yours is longer for sure.' Jo-Dee confirms. My hair doesn't know how to stop growing sometimes. If I had a nickel for every centimeter of hair, I could save a thousand acres of Brazilian jungle.
'Jo-Dee, how many braid layuhs will I have?' Iev wonders. 'Because Carson doesn't usually have a comb and he has kinda thick finguhs and he did ten layuhs that one time for my graduation dinnuh.' Iev smiles at the telling of her memory. Her accent is so adorable. It comes and goes and I can't help but smile, seeing this petite person while hearing this voice talking like Robert DeNiro.
'Ten is pretty good.' Jo-Dee smiles. 'I have about six in now and we're about halfway through...so maybe if I'm careful, we can get a few more than ten.' Jo-Dee concludes.
At that, Emily walks into the trailer with a wet umbrella. 'Hello ladies.' She greets, shaking snow from her jacket. 'It's coming down out there. Thought I might find some shelter for a minute... they said we should expect at least ten inches.'
'Hi Emily.' Jo-Dee and I chime in together.
'Hi Miss Emily.' Iev waves from her seat careful not to turn her head.
'Is that Iev in your chair?' Emily leans closer to look at the mirror. 'Hi woman! Good to see you again! You're looking sultry.' Emily comments on Iev's braid.
'Miss Emily, thank you for letting me visit tuhday.'
'Of course darling. You're part of the Earp family whether you like it or not.' Emily beams. 'And please, call me Emily.'
'Okay Emily...Kat said I shouldn't stay home so much because I'd get lost in my writing...do you... get lost in your writing a lot?'
'Oh, you me both girlfriend!' Emily spouts. 'Seriously, I do, many times. The entire team can get very focused. When you get deep into an idea and it keeps giving you more and more...eventually it writes itself.' She laughs. 'I heard you recited some poetry recently?' Emily broached.
Iev freezes in place gulping in a nervous panic. Her eyes avoiding the depth of the mirror, unable to escape Emily's probing ones, she looks down at her knees, grasping her notepad tightly as if embarrassed. Recognizing Iev's reaction, I reach for Emily's arm, eyeing her and quietly suggest, 'Em, I don't think it was meant to be public.'
