Julie's POV
I walked into music class and sat down next to Flynn and I could feel everyone's eyes looking at me. I had just played the Orhpum last night, and now here I was, back at school.
"You were amazing last night!" Flynn says. "And the guys are finally in a better place thanks to you."
"Actually.... playing the Orphum wasn't their unfinished business." I say. "When I got home, they were still in the studio." I shuddered thinking about seeing them lying in a pile on the floor on the verge of death- or they were already dead but you know what I mean. "Caleb's curse was about to destroy them when the strangest thing happened...I could touch them."
"What!?"
"I know, it's crazy." I say. "I'm still trying to process what this means, do you think they're alive again?"
"I don't know, I mean you may be able to touch them, but they could still be invisible to everyone else." Flynn says.
"This is all just happening so fast." I say. "We still don't even know how they connect to me."
"It's deffintly through your mom." Flynn says. "I mean think about it, the Sunset Curve shirt, the dailah that lady gave you outside the Orphum, they're signs."
"I don't know." I sigh. "I just think if Mom wanted to talk to me she'd do it herself."
"But what if she can't." Flynn says. "What if the only way is through signs."
"I don't know, but me and the guys are gonna have band practice after school. Wanna come?"
"Already got another gig?" Flynn asks with a smile.
"No, but we need to be ready for when one comes out way." I say. "Last night made me realize I might not get to be with the guys forever...that I will have to say goodbye eventually."
"Sorry to interrupt." Says a voice I knew all to well. I look up to face Carrie standing in front of me. I really didn't feel like taking anything from her right now, epically her self conceited comments about her being better than me. I played the Orhpum and she didn't, if she was gonna complain about that I didn't want to listen. "But I just wanted to say....good job last night...and I'm sorry for everything."
I couldn't believe she was actually complementing me and apologizing. I could tell by her regretful eyes that she really ment it. Me and Carrie used to be friends, and I did miss her.
"So just like that you're gonna apologize and think that everything's gonna be all cool again?" Flynn says. "Just admit it Carrie, you were wrong and Julie is just better than you."
I was about to tell Flynn to calm down, but Carrie responded with something rather unexpected for her charecter.
"You're right." She says. "I was wrong, Julie you are amazing, your whole band is. Congratulations on playing the Orhpum." And with that, she just walked back to her seat.
"Am I dreaming?" I say, this seeming too good to be true. Could I actually get Carrie back as a a friend?
"I guess she has a heart afterall." Flynn says.
I look over at Carrie and can't help but smile. Maybe our frienemy relationship was over and we could go back to friends. Then I got a crazy idea.
I walk over to where she was sitting, and as if she could feel my presence, she turned to face me. "Oh, hi." She says.
"I didn't get a chance to say thanks for congratulating me." I say. "Thanks."
"If anyone deserves to play the Orhpum, it's you." Carrie says. "You were outstanding."
"Thank you." I say. "Hey um, would you like to come over after school today? Flynn's gonna be there too, but I don't know I just-"
"Really?" Carrie asks. "You don't hate me after everything I've said?"
"We've all said things we wish we could take back." I say. "So I'll see you there?"
"Yeah, yeah thanks." She says.
Luke's POV
"What does this mean?" I ask as Bobby stood still starring at Alex like he was a ghost- oh wait he is.
"I found Willie, and I explained everything to him and he says he knows what kinda ghost we are." Alex says.
"What did he say?" I ask, eager to finally get an answer to our burning question: why could we been seen by lifers now?
"We didn't get there." Alex sighs. "W were inturupted and then I had to go so Caleb didn't see me."
"Well we gotta find him and ask him." I say.
"I don't know when I'll be able to talk to him again with Caleb watching him so closely." Alex says. "We just have to be patient."
I didn't want to be patient, I needed answers and I needed them now.
"Whatever." I say before furiously poofing away. I sat under the big maple tree in the park that was close to my old house and leaned my head against the trunk. Why did this have to be so complicated?
"You alright?" I hear a voice ask me.
"Not really." I answer honestly. "But yeah."
Reggie sits in the grass next to me. "Why are you so desperate to know what kind of ghosts we are?"
I sigh. "I don't know. Its just...what if this whole lifers being able to see us thing isn't permanent?"
"Then we go back to how things were before I guess." Reggie shrugs. "I didn't know that would be such a big deal."
Reggie was always a person I could confide in and connect to on another level. So, I decided to tell him what I was really worried about.
"I want to see my parents, finally make up with them face to face. But I don't want to walk back into their life if I'm just gonna disappear again, so I need to know if lifers will always be able to see us."
"I'm sure they will." Reggie says, trying to comfort me. "I mean, why would it go away?"
"I'm just scared that if I go back into my parents' lives, I'll lose them all over again."
Reggie wraps his arm around me in a hug. I've never been much of a huger, but a hug is something I didn't know I needed. The way his arms wrapped around me, holding on to me, made me feel alright. More than alright, it made me feel like everything would somehow be okay. I never knew just a simple interaction could make a person feel so comforted.
"You won't lose them." Reggie says. "You'll always be with them, no matter what. Isn't that what faimly is?"
"Thanks Reg." I say. "I just wish I had the courage to talk to them, you know?"
"Well...what if I went with you?" Reggie offers.
