We talk to the night manager for a minute before we leave. He said the camera facing that unit has been busted for months and he didn't see anyone suspicious this evening other than police showing up.
I thank him for his time even though he was utterly useless to me.
"How could anyone have moved it that fast?" I think out loud. "Jacobi was the only person between the time I took the picture of the baby stuff and now that could have deleted the evidence. What's his motive?"
"Where are we headed?" Bakugo asks, interrupting my spiraling thoughts as we sit in the car.
"To my office. I have an article to write." I tell him what building it's in and he takes off.
"Why does that sound so menacing?"
"Because I'm not holding anything back. This is just so wrong and someone was MURDERED and it's being covered up. I have a platform to do something with my evidence, I'm going to do something." I state firmly, taking out my phone to outline my thoughts.
"Is that wise?" He asks
"No. But I'm doing it anyway" I state firmly. He doesn't say anything else.
At my office, I take the elevator to my floor, using the ID I keep in my wallet to access all the doors for 24 hour access. I lead Bakugo to my cubicle and boot up my computer. He sits in the seat next to me, leaning back and lacing his hands together behind his head. I appreciate that he's making a show of settling in. I don't feel as pressured to write quickly.
It takes 45 minutes to type up my first draft. The headline reads 'Pregnant Woman Slain. Police Do Nothing.' It's not witty or clever but it gets your attention and gets my point across.
After four more read through, I go to one of the rooms shooting off the main area and make a copy of Lilly's medical records. On the copy, I black out any irrelevant information and scan it to my email. Back at my desk, I attach the pdf to my article to show proof that Lilly was pregnant. I'm hoping no one questions my integrity that the storage unit was actually full. I also made sure to leave both Bakugo and Kirishima out of the article. They don't need to get swept up into the shit storm I'm about to unleash.
"I think it's done" I say, finishing up the final edit to make it flow a little better. It's not a long article and it only introduces my theories about why she would be murdered, without directly saying Meldrum's name. He's referred to as 'her boss' to keep myself out of legal trouble. "Want to read it?"
"Yeah, sure" Bakugo stands and stretches, cracking his back. He's been really great this whole time. Never rushed me and stifled all his yawns so he thought I wouldn't see them.
I get up from my chair to offer it to him and he sits, leaning towards the monitor to really take it all in. I pace nervously up and down the isle, waiting for him to read it. I know other people read my work, I've just never experienced someone reading it right in front of me.
"It's well written" he says eventually and I come jogging back over.
"...but?" I prompt, turning the chair around so he's looking at me.
"But you're painting a big target on your back. You all but said it was Meldrum that killed her or ordered her dead and based on all this, he's a scary dude."
"You're not afraid of him, are you?" I tease, hooking my finger in the collar of his shirt.
"I'm not. But you should be." He's still very serious.
"Are you going to stop me from publishing it?"
"No. I suspect even if I tried, you'd find a way to get it out there anyway. But you need to be careful if you do. Not only will Meldrum be gunning for you but you're about to piss off the entire police force."
