Chapter 26

"My apologies for today, Ms. L/n" the voice says and I pull my phone away from my face to look at the caller ID. It's Gil. I saved his contact information after he gave me his card.

"How did you get my number?" I ask

"Not important. What is important is that today should not have happened and my employer sends his apologies as well." Gil responds cooly.

"Are you trying to tell me that Meldrum isn't the one that ordered me to get rundown today?"

"My employer" he emphasizes the word "has not ordered your demise. You currently have use to us and we have a deal to fulfill before that would be on the table."

"That's comforting"

"The driver today has been dealt with and there will not be a repeat attempt on your life. For now."

"You're full of good news aren't you." I roll my eyes and sit up, jostling Hank who perks his ears up. "How did you 'deal with' the driver?"

"You don't need to know" which lets me know that he either is in a body bag or feels like he wants to be.

"When can I expect this favor of your employer's to come through?"

"Soon enough. Don't be so eager for it. We both know you're not going to like it."

"I'm too tired for this." I hang up before I can get any more frustrated or creeped out by Gil.

I put my phone done and immediately pick it back up, calling one of my favorite heroes.

"Hey baby, you alright?" Kirishima answers. I can hear Bakugo's distinctive voice in the background yelling at someone else.

"Yeah. I was just hoping to do a little work. Do you have a laptop somewhere?"

"Probably in the gym. I think I was using it for workout videos last."

"Do you mind if I borrow it?" I ask

"Are you going to write another article that's going to make someone want to run you over with a truck?" I don't answer right away "that's the loudest silence I've ever heard."

"Is that y/n?" Bakugo shouts from off to the side.

"Yeah, she's about to write another article" there's a shuffling and suddenly Bakugo's voice is much closer

"Like I said before, I know better than to try to stop you but as your boyfriend, I need to remind you that you almost got run over today and the day we met, you were being chased by a man who has enough violent charges that I'm surprised he's not already back in jail" Bakugo's voice is hushed like he stepped to a secluded spot. There's more shuffling.

"And as your boyfriend," Kirishima pops back on "I also have to remind you to keep your weight off your leg. I'll bring the lap top to you, just wait until we get home. It should be about.... An hour or so."

"I'll take both of those things under advisement. Put me on speaker" there's a click and I know that he did as I asked "thank you both for your concern. No, Kat, I'm not taking it lightly and no, Eiji, I won't do anything to hurt myself further. Go help someone who needs you more than me."

"Why didn't you tell me what I was getting into?" Bakugo asks and I'm pretty sure he isn't talking to me.

"I did try to tell you, but you're just as stubborn as her." I'm no longer part of their conversation.

"You're one to talk Mr. 'I'll wait until she's getting together with someone to make my move'!"

"Both of you need to get back to work and stop arguing like an old married couple" I smile as they continue to picker over me. "I'm hanging up now!" They keep bickering. I roll my eyes. "Love you, bye!"
