"I do apologize for taking up so much of your time, Ms. L/n, but you see Lilly's parent's couldn't make it until now." The Commissioner resists a smirk. It now makes sense why he would waste so much time at the beginning of this meeting to just talk to me.

I glare at him over my shoulder, trying not to show the parents how angry I am. It's not their fault that no one is doing anything about their daughter's murder.

"This is the author of that article?" The mother asks, interrupting our stare down.

"Yes, and I'm sorry you had to find out this way that your daughter did not die of natural causes, but I'm not sorry I wrote the article" I soften my tone for her and step toward her, grabbing her hands. "I couldn't stand by and do nothing knowing that her murderer is still at large."

"As you can see, we had nothing to do with the article" Calvin cuts in "if you would like to press charges, we can proceed with that no-"

"Thank you." The mom tearily interrupts, looking at me and pulling me into a hug. It's a warm mom hug and on top of all the emotions of today, it makes me miss my parents even more.

"What?" Calvin and I ask simultaneously.

"Thank you." She repeats, pushing me back enough to look me in the eyes. "I knew my baby wouldn't over dose but every time I called, I would get called crazy or emotional and no one seemed to be listening. But you did. You put it out there. You're going to get my baby justice."

The dad is standing with a hand on the small of his wife's back, his throat is working, but he can't seem to form any words as water pools in his eyes.

"You're not pressing charges for her blunt article?" Calvin asks like he needs to confirm it.

"Of course not" the dad finally talks and his tone is harsh and angry "she's the only person that's done a fucking thing. You should do your job as well as she does her." He turns to me "thank you for having the courage to do something. You gave our daughter a voice. You wrote her perfectly and  you have our full blessing to continue as you see fit."

I just nod, too speechless to really say anything. This isn't how I expected them to react and it's definitely not what Calvin had in mind.

The parents take their leave, the mom hugging me one more time and the father shaking my hand and slipping me his number so I can call if I have any more questions about Lilly.

When the door closes behind them, I turn to find the commissioner fuming.

"This isn't over" he grits out through clenched teeth.

"It better not be. You have a murder to investigate" I reply flippantly walking to the door, I get it open just a little bit before he storms up to me and slams it shut, looming behind me. "Move your hand. I came here as a courtesy and since it's clear you can't legally hold me for anything, I'm going home."

"And where is that, in case we need to find you." He's still close enough to breathe down the back of my neck.

I turn, pressing my back to the door and lifting my head to look down my nose at him. I'm not afraid of a bully. "You can call. Better even, contact my lawyer."

"I don't get it." I don't reply and he continues, his face is softer and he's searching my eyes "you have those two wrapped around your finger. Kirishima, I can understand since he's a softie, but Bakugo...."

It feels like he's just thinking out loud, but I'm interested in how the sentence finishes.

He shakes his head and leans down way too close to me. I stretch my head back as far as I can to get away, but I'm starting to feel caged in and, obviously, very uncomfortable but trying my best not to show it and stand my ground "what is it about you?"
