Alison was filled with nervous anticipation as she sat on the low grey stone wall which surrounded the small dock on the Island. The ferry carrying Paul was due within the next half hour. Part of her still couldn't quite believe she was going to see him in the flesh again.
These past few days, ever since he had confirmed he was definitely coming to see her, all sort of thoughts had flitted through her head. She was looking forward to seeing him, yet at the same time she found herself fretting slightly if he would feel the same way about her as he did before he had left.
Despite the fact he kept telling her he couldn't wait to see her again, she told herself he had returned to his life in London and things had changed so much for him, thankfully for the better.
Now he might find it completely different when he returned to her and the Island. Perhaps he would discover how dull it all was, then come to the conclusion he had made a terrible mistake getting involved with her.
She chided herself for these negative thoughts, knowing she was being silly; but it still lurked in the back of her mind, making her feel a little anxious.
She wasn't one for making a fuss about her appearance, but when she found out he would be coming for sure, she had taken some of her savings money out of the bank and had travelled to Dublin to do some shopping.
She bought herself a few new outfits, including rather slinky black dress and new shoes to match. She also decided to get a new hairdo, as she wanted to make a special effort for him.
Today she had put on some make up, and dressed her new dark jeans and white top, hoping she looked ok. It was still far too cold to put on her dress especially when she was outdoors, so she decided to save that for a special occasion when they were staying in.
When she finally spotted the ferry coming in from a distance, her heartbeat quickened knowing he was on it. She had told him the night before she would be meeting him getting off the Ferry and he had been happy to hear it, telling her couldn't wait.
Now the time had arrived, Alison's slight anxiety as she watched the Ferry get closer made it seem like it was taking forever..
But finally it docked in the small port and as she got up from the wall, she realised her legs were shaking slightly as she made her way to where the passenger cars unloaded.
Paul's car was the only one onboard, so it wasn't long until it came rolling down the gangway and into the small car park next to the dock, that led onto the main road..
Alison's steps quickened as she walked over to the small car park.
The car had pulled to a halt just as she reached it. Paul got out, then just turned to stand and watch her approaching for a moment, letting his blue eyes hungrily drink in the sight of her, as she smiled at him somewhat tentatively.
He hadn't really changed, except his hair seem a little longer than she remembered it.
Her heart was thudding so loudly in her ears, she barely heard him when he finally spoke.
"Hello Ali," he greeted her, before moving to close the small gap left between them
The next thing she knew she was in his arms, and he was crushing her against him in a tight embrace that almost made it hard for her to breath.
Yet it still felt so good as she clung to him, burying her face against the warmth of the thin material of his jacket, the taking in familiar tang of his aftershave. It almost felt like he had never really been away.
There was a strange tightness in her throat as she tried to keep her emotions in check, so that she didn't give in to the tears that were also threatening to engulf her.
