[ kageyama tobio || slight angst, fluff ]
today felt like any other ordinary day to me. i went to school as i normally did and attended all my classes. everything was routine besides the fact that kageyama and all our friends were acting weird around me. each time i tried to talk to one of them, they would give me an awkward look before scurrying away. as the day went on and each encounter piled on top of one another, a creeping suspicion that kageyama wanted to break up with me and all our friends were picking his side over my own popped up into my head and with that in mind, the rest of my day was pretty glum.
spotting hoshiumi as i stepped out of my last class of the day, i pivoted the other way to avoid the awkward run in with him like i have been experiencing all day with everyone else. "Y/N!!!" i heard him shout out loud after me, making me jump a little from surprise.
slowly looking over my shoulder, i watched as he ran up to me, wildly waving his hands in the air. "hoshiumi-san," i greeted with a slight head bow. "is something wrong?"
he tilted his head slightly, a curious expression on his face. "what do you mean?"
with a slight shrug, i said, "everyone's been avoiding me all day so i just assumed that you would do the same too..."
a guilt look flashed on his face as the words left my lips, but it was quickly replaced as if i just imagined it. "are you free later?" he asked, changing the subject.
thinking about my plans in my head, i didn't recall having any plans made for today. "yeah, i'm free. i don't have anything planned for later..." i paused. "actually kageyama and i were supposed to do something right now, but he's been avoiding me."
he shook his head and gave me a slap on the arm. "don't worry about it! you're gonna hang out with me later, don't you worry," he said reassuringly with a wink. "i'll send you the details!" he yelled as he jogged off in the direction he came from.
soon after he left, i received a text from him saying that i should dress up nice and casual and to come meet him at his apartment at six. sighing, i checked the time before opening my conversation with kageyama. all he sent me today was a good morning and never responded back afterwards. i wonder what's wrong... i asked myself as i debated whether or not to text him. deciding not to be a bother to him, i put my phone away and went back home to get ready for this hang out.
once i got home, i ended up doing some homework before i got ready to hang out with hoshiumi. realizing that time passed me by, i sent him a quick text explaining that i might be a little late. quickly making sure that i looked presentable, i made my way over. seeing that hoshiumi wanted to hang out with me when everyone else tried to avoid me made me feel a little better, but i was still upset that no one would talk to me. determined, i told myself that i would ask hoshiumi about it once i get there.
"come in, door's unlocked," hoshiumi texted me right away as i texted him that i was here. furrowing my eyebrows, i suspiciously turned the knob and slowly opened the door. there was no light coming from inside and i fumbled a little to find the light switch. once i finally flicked the lights back on, an audible gasp escaped my lips as numerous voices shouted "happy birthday!" and confetti was shot in my direction. once i was able to see through the confetti, the corner of my eyes started to well up with emotion.
"happy birthday, y/n," kageyama greeted me as he made his way up to me. a guiltily smile tugged on his lips as he pulled me into a hug.
sniffling, i looked up at him. in a small voice, i asked him, "what's all this for...?"
awkwardly, he cupped my cheeks and swiped his thumbs under my eyes to wipe away my cascading tears. "it's a surprise party, my little berry."
looking behind him, all our friends had wide grins plastered on their faces as they looked back at me. looking back up at kageyama, i asked, "so you're not mad at me...?"
hinata laughed and clapped me on the shoulder, "it must've been hard seeing your boyfriend ignore you in school huh? he kept complaining how sad he was from avoiding you."
"hinataaaa, i haven't seen you since high school graduation!" i exclaimed, grabbing his arm and shaking him a little.
"stupid, you better let go of y/n," kageyama threatened as he took hinata's hand off my shoulder before he wrapped his arm around my waist. "i'm sorry for ignoring you all day, it was so hard."
"i thought you were going to break up with me!" i cried, holding onto him.
he held me tight, "why would i ever do that? you make me the happiest i've ever been and today's your day so i wanted to make it as special as i could by surprising you,' he grumbled, hiding his face from me to hide his blush.
"awww look at kageyama getting all flustered over his significant otherrr," tanaka teased, nudging nishinoya.
finally calming down, i looked around the apartment once more and couldn't help but feel overwhelmingly happy that what i felt earlier was just my imagination and that kageyama put in the effort to make me feel special. "thank you..."
"happy birthday, y/n!!" hoshiumi greeted me, giving me a huge grin.
"it's my birthday?" i asked, finally realizing the whole party was supposed to be a birthday party for me.
"... don't tell me you forgot that it was your birthday?" kageyama asked, a look of absolute surprise painted on his face.
with a pout, i said, "it's not my fault. you and everyone were ignoring me all day and it slipped my mind!"
sighing, his expression relaxed as he leaned in to kiss my head. "i won't ever ignore you ever again. were you surprised, though?"
"of course! thank you again, and thank you everyone!"
he smiled warmly down at me and guided me to where everyone was. "enjoy yourself because today is just for you, my love."
