heading towards the gym, i took notice of the group of girls standing in front of the door, trying to peek in. as if he knew i was here, oikawa slid the door open wide and called out my name once his eyes laid on my approaching figure. my lip quirked slightly into a grimace at the sudden spotlight of attention once the girls turned to look at me.
"ohh, don't worry girls! i haven't forgotten about you!" he exclaimed, turning his attention back to the group of girls as they started to voice their annoyance. as i continued to watch them, they started to look more like a mother duck trying to calm his quacking ducklings.
"ready to go?"
averting my gaze from oikawa and his fan club, my eyes landed on a pair that looked tired. he inclined his head to meet my stare head on, making me turn my head away from him. "i should be the one asking you that, hajime."
he shrugged in response and started walking off. "well if we're both ready, let's get going then."
grumbling under my breath, i lightly jogged over to catch up to him. "what about toru?"
"he'll be fine," he responded, hiking his bag up higher on his shoulder. we fell into a comfortable silence as we made our way home. as the silence continued to stretch out, my mind started to wander with thoughts of school work. "watch out," he called out, pulling me out of my thoughts. he wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me towards him.
feeling the way that his arm flexed as he pulled me into him and the faint scent of sweat caused my face to flush. luckily for me, he pulled me close enough so that my face was on his chest. feeling my heart beat start to race, i wondered if my heartbeat was so loud that he could hear it.
"y/n?"
"huh?"
"... you can let go now," he said after a pause.
my eyes widened at his words and i suddenly pushed myself off him. "pfft— i wasn't scared or nothing," i said, flustered. with my hands on his chest, i finally felt the way his heart was racing under my palms. i also noticed that his arm was still around me. clearing my throat, i said, "you can let go now."
blinking, he stared down at me. after a moment, it seemed as if my words finally registered through his head as he finally let go of me. the act was quite clumsy and quick, but it was still pretty cute. he ran a hand through his hair as he said, "s-sorry, there was a puddle and you weren't paying attention."
once i finally calmed down, i found his reactions amusing. "ohh?" i teased, leaning my back against the railing that overlooked the water. i watched as he stopped walking as well and stood next to me, resting his hip against the railing as he looked down at me. the moon reflecting off the water casted a nightly glow on iwazumi's face that made him so handsome. it looked like there was something on his mind as his eyes seem to search my face for something.
suddenly he looked away, turning his body so that he was looking out towards the water. "sorry for always making you wait up for me and oikawa."
i breathed out through my nose in amusement as i nudged his arm with my own. "what're you talking about? growing up, i would always wait for you guys after practice."
"you don't really have to do that, you know?" he responded, glancing my way. "that's something a significant other would do."
"oh? so you're saying that a childhood friend can't do that?" i teased, nudging him again.
"no, no, no. that's not what i'm trying to say..." he trailed off, turning his head to look at me again. "hey."
i looked back at him, watching as the soft waves reflected off of his eyes. his eyes alone seemed to be swimming in thought. "you like me, don't you?"
"PFFFT— WHATTT?!" i exclaimed, turning away from his probing stare. i let out an awkward laugh as i tried to search for a way out of this situation. my face was ablaze due to the fact that his direct confrontation took me by surprise. "AS IF I WOULD EVER LIK—"
"well, i hope you like me and not shittykawa, because i like you."
once the words left his lips, my head swerved so hard that i might as well have decapitated myself at that moment. "come again?"
"i said..." he paused, leaning closer to me. "i like you." we continued to stare at each other for a few more moments, basking in the silence that came after his confession.
"what?" i dumbly asked, still trying to wrap my mind around the words that were coming out of his mouth.
"maybe this will help you understand," he said as he closed the gap in between us. his lips were surprisingly soft as they pressed against mine. automatically, my hand rested on his chest where i felt his heartbeat racing again. slowly, he pulled back and his face was as flushed as mine. "you get it now?"
"um... no, can you do that again?" i asked, my nature to tease him coming out as a reflex.
he chuckled and leaned in for another kiss. in all my years knowing him, i couldn't have imagined my unrequited feelings being reciprocated.
"MY GOODNESS! FINALLY!" a sudden outburst made both of us spring away from one another. rubbing my back from banging it against the railing, i found oikawa walking up to us with a smirk on his face. "took you guys long enough."
"do you hear something?" iwazumi asked me, blatantly staring at oikawa.
knowing the drill, i played along. "nope, must've been the wind." getting off the railing, i took his hand and started walking the way home.
"HEY!! YOU GUYS!!" oikawa shouted, stomping his foot.
"how's your back? it looked like it hurt," iwazumi commented, lacing his fingers through mine.
"why? wanna kiss it better?"
"HEY!!" oikawa continued to shout. "YOU GUYS ARE SO MEAN TO ME!"
glancing back, i noticed him starting to run in order to catch up to us. laughing, i tugged on iwaizumi's hand and ran. as we ran the rest of the way home, i couldn't help but feel relieved that i don't have to hide the way i feel anymore.
