Jin and Lars snuck out of the penthouse early morning on a Saturday, before anyone even woke up, and went down the passage, passing the lift lobby and eventually coming up to a room in a secluded corner of that floor.
"It's all in here," Jin said, inserting a key into the knob. "I had everything transferred to this room, so it should be in here."
Lars nodded and watched as the door creaked open. He lifted the handle of the bucket, together with a mop, while holding a broom and a dustpan in his other hand.
"You sure you don't wanna call one of the janitors?" Lars asked, shifting from one foot to another as he watched Jin feel the wall for a light switch in the dark. He eventually found it, making light flood into the room, revealing cobwebs and dust-covered walls. "What actually happened to the Mishima Estate?"
Jin shrugged, holding a smaller bucket and a few dust cloths in one hand, and a feather duster under his arm. "I don't know. Heihachi just left it abandoned."
"Maybe Kazumi's ghost still lurks there, haunting him," Lars snorted, entering the room with Jin. "Oh wow... this is one big mess."
"We might have to take breaks," Jin said, putting the buckets on the ground. "Wish I had called Hwoarang or Steve, but..."
"You don't want anyone to know your secret," Lars sighed. "Well, I guess that makes sense."
They started by dusting off the cobwebs. Lars frowned as he saw how Jin was struggling to get the remnants of the cobwebs off the feather duster. "You sure you don't want to call the janitor?"
"No," Jin said firmly. "But I have an idea. There's a cleaning closet down the hall, can you get the vacuum?"
Lars sighed and dropped the mop into the bucket. "Is it locked?"
Jin handed him the keys, holding out one particular key. "Here. It's this one. Don't lose it in the bunch."
Lars nodded and took it, going down the hall. He opened the closet and took out the vacuum cleaner, together with some floor cleaner.
'From rebel leader to janitor,' Lars sighed as he went back to the storeroom. 'Why is Jin so mean...'
Soon, the room was all cleaned up. The two men then sat down to sort everything out.
"Are you sure we can do all of this by today?" Lars asked, wiping what seemed to be a traditional Japanese lantern. "There's a lot of stuff here."
Jin shook his head. "I don't think so. We might have to come again tomorrow."
Lars silently groaned and looked down at the lantern in his hands. "Can we keep some of the things to ourselves?"
Jin rolled his eyes. "Sure, knock yourself out. Heihachi is your dad anyway."
Lars frowned. "He's your grandpa."
"Still closer to you," Jin shrugged with a smirk.
Lars sighed and put the lantern down. "I still don't know why you're doing this."
"You wanna find out if Heihachi scribbled his father's picture or not?" Jin asked with a smirk. "I have a strong feeling that he did."
Lars shook his head and continued sorting Heihachi's old things. Two dust-covered journals caught his eyes in a corner. He got up and went towards it to see what they were.
He blew off the dust and slowly opened one of them.
Property of Mishima Heihachi, 1967.
"Yo!" Lars suddenly exclaimed, startling Jin. "I just found his diary!"
"What year is it?" Jin asked, looking up from whatever he was holding.
"Sixty-seven," Lars said, handing the diary to Jin. He looked at the other one and wiped off the dust before opening it. "This one's sixty-eight."
"It's the year Dad was born!" Jin gasped, snatching the book off Lars's hands, much to his irritation. "See if there's some more, maybe we can find out what the heck that was going on in that winged head of his..."
Lars frowned thoughtfully. "I only saw these two..."
Jin ignored him and got up, searching around the room for a collection of Heihachi's journals. He soon found a box of them and brought them to Lars. To his surprise, Lars also had a smaller box of similar journals too.
"Wait..." Jin said, confused. "How many of them are there? There's like thirty in here, how much did he write?"
"I have no idea," Lars shrugged, putting the crate down. "But there aren't that many in here, just like six or seven of them."
He took one out of the crate and saw the year 1968 engraved into the cover. Confused, he looked over at Heihachi's diary from the same year, which Jin left on the ground next to him.
"Wait, this one's 1968 too," Lars said, puzzled. He opened the book and gasped as he saw the name written in neat letters on the first page. "This isn't Heihachi's!"
Jin looked up, an eyebrow raised. "Who's is it? Dad's?"
Lars rolled his eyes. "Jin... where's your logic? How could Kazuya have written a diary when he was a baby?"
"Maybe he stole one of Heihachi's extra diaries and did so when he was older?" Jin shrugged. "Lars, just because there's a year on the cover, that doesn't mean the person used it on that particular year."
Lars just sighed and showed him the first page. "It's your grandma's..."
Jin gasped and backed away, much to Lars's surprise. "Throw that thing away, I don't wanna see that!"
Lars just shook his head and flipped through the pages. He laughed when he read a particularly funny story that Kazumi wrote in one of the entries.
