Now enjoy a little one-shot that fits into this chapter – it's Gwynriel from Nesta's POV, featuring Rhys <3
N E S T A
After having told Cassian she'd needed to take a minute to herself to clear her head – just having received the news she would be accompanying Azriel to the prison – Nesta stood on a balcony which faced the East side of the River Estate.
She contemplated what it would be like to explore the prison, a place which would always be terrifying to her after the last time she'd been there; after she'd come close to witnessing Cassian's death at the hands on Lanthys.
She was just about content alone in the sounds of the early morning – Velaris' native birds singing, the flow of a river somewhere, and the conversation of Gwyn and Azriel - which she may or may not have been eavesdropping on.
It was only natural, after all, seeing as she had nothing better to do; and that the two of them - who Nesta had almost immediately deemed perfect for one another - seemingly had no knowledge that she could hear them.
Gwyn didn't want Azriel to go; Azriel was telling her that he would be fine, and that he wanted them to be friends again – whatever that meant.
"It's rude to eavesdrop." A voice said, a sudden shock for Nesta.
She turned quickly – Rhys.
She rolled her eyes, and resumed gazing out to Velaris from the balcony. "Says the man with the power of mind invasion."
"Semantics."
"I-" Rhys started, but Nesta quickly shushed him, then gestured to somewhere to her left, where the sound of Gwyn and Azriel remained.
Rhys raised a brow as he took in the sound, then let that wicked smirk spread upon his face.
"Fuck... it's been a long time since I heard Azriel flirt so casually."
Nesta grinned. "How long do you think until he realises he's in love with her?"
"Knowing Az?" Rhys said, going to lean against the railing upon the balcony. "Well with his inability to decipher what's right in front of him, I'd say five months – to a century."
Nesta huffed a laugh. "I've decided that part of my mission in this prison will be to knock some sense into him."
"Good. I think Gwyn will be good for him – is good for him."
"Good for each other." Nesta added.
"I want to apologise for springing the prison onto you so suddenly, by the way." Rhys said.
She shrugged. "I'll be fine."
"I think so too." He replied.
She chuckled then, "stop being so nice to me, it's strange."
"Stop being so nice to me then." He replied, and Nesta rolled her eyes.
She caught wind of Gwyn and Azriel once more then - the sound of them walking.
"Oh, I think we'll be able to see them now." She said, stretching over the balcony a little to see better.
The two of them walked along a path, Azriel with an arm wrapped around Gwyn, leaning in to whisper something in her ear that made her blush.
Nesta tried to contain her smile at the sight, but failed miserably. She turned to Rhys, who seemingly had a similar reaction.
"They're perfect for one another." She commented.
"I've never seen Az with his guard down like that before; or so comfortable." Rhys agreed. "Never."
"I've never seen Gwyn like that either."
"You know," Rhys started, "last Solstice, I had to intervein between a near kiss between Azriel and Elain-"
"What?" She snapped.
"I stopped it before anything could happen." He clarified. "Then it was only a matter of Court relations. But now... I'm glad I did - because my brother being happy could be the best thing to happen during all of the Koschei bullshit."
"Hmm." Nesta agreed.
Gwyn and Azriel, she thought, - the two of them reminded her of turning the pain into power.
