Chapter 15

Shayden started moving; she was running as fast as she could in the direction of Mirah’s scream. Nixie was still standing there, awestruck, looking at where her mate had been just a few moments before. Nixie felt a pull in her chest, an ache, as if she were being compelled to follow Shayden.

“I could carry you, we would be able to catch up, but only if you hurry.” Lars spoke quickly. He could see the single-minded need in his daughter’s eyes. He was slightly disgruntled at the fact that his only child was the mate of a nightflyer. A female nightflyer at that. The future Queen of the Nightflyers. However, that was something to discuss with her at a later time.

“I can run.” The words left Nixie’s mouth at almost the same instant that she too started running off at an inhuman speed. Lars couldn’t believe his eyes. She was too young to be able to express her powers!

Lars took off as fast as he could, and he was only barely keeping up with Nixie as it was. She would be very powerful indeed when her powers matured. He grinned as his heart swelled with pride towards his daughter. He only hoped he could mend the bond between them that was broken when he left.

Coming to a sudden halt he stood beside his daughter. The nightflyer, Shayden, was in the process of spreading her wings. The glamour magic she used to hide her tentacles and the distended veins that curled their way up from her abdomen, went around her sides and reached her upper back, to gather at the base of her black, leathery wings had been lifted. Even he was in awe of the majestic, deadly sight.

“Shayden, I’m following you. You have no say in the matter.” Nixie stared directly into the back of her mate’s head, hoping the look at least singed her hair. “You cannot stop me!”

“I want only your safety, my love.” Shayden sounded impatient, but she was beginning to realise that she indeed had no control over her stubborn mate; her resolve was crumbling.

“I will try my best to not get harmed, Shay. She is my friend too.” Shayden nodded her head almost imperceptibly. Her wings rose up high. Shayden lifted Nixie’s face to hers as she readied to take off.

“Be careful. I love you.” Their lips met in a sweet, but brief, kiss.

“I will be. I love you too.” Nixie’s hair was blown out of her eyes by the gust of wind Shayden’s wings created as they lifted her into the air.

“Take care of her, Sir Lars, or I will have your head.” Shayden was deadly serious and Lars felt his chest tighten with the strength of that threat. He had no doubt that, should she wish to, Shayden would tear him to pieces.

“Without hesitation, you have my word. She is my daughter after all.”

Shayden nodded quickly, shot one last concerned look in her mate’s direction, and very nearly vanished from sight. Nightflyers may not be the fastest of the creatures across The Realms, but they came a very close second. Lars had barely time to catch a breath before he was again exhausting large amounts of energy in order to keep up with his daughter who followed the call of her mate.

A sharp cry filled the air and Nixie stopped dead in her tracks.

“What is it?” Lars took the time to catch his breath.

“I can’t feel her anymore!” Nixie’s distraught voice reached down to the very depths of his soul and it ached. He placed his hand on the small of her back and led her forward.

“We must go to the place where you last felt her presence. Judging by the direction we are headed, I assume that they went to the Portal with your friend. If this is so, Shayden may very well have followed them through and this would cause you to lose the signal of her call.” Nixie turned questioning eyes on her father.
