I finish wiping down the last tables before closing up the diner. It's late and the only ones here are me and Danny.

I put all the cleaning supplies in the closet. I start to put the chairs on top of the tables.

I turn my head when I see movement behind me. I see Danny with a huge grin on his face as he brings out two milkshakes.

"Who's paying for those?" I ask, knowing we're not supposed to make food without it being paid for.

"Nobody's gonna know, sweetheart" he shrugs.

"I know. You know." I point out.

"Can you keep a secret?" he asks with a smile.

I'm transported back to a room a long time ago.

"But what if Clay didn't know?" I grab his hand, "Think about it. If he doesn't know then we can make sure we actually work before we tell him."

He lets that sink in for a second.

We could work if Clay didn't know. We would tell him eventually, but we need to get a start without any pressure.

It could work.

"Y/n, i understand what you're saying" he says slowly,"but I need to hear exactly what you're thinking we do about it?"

I give him a smile. "Can you keep a secret, Nick?"

I have a little smile on my face as I think about it. I was so happy in that moment. The anticipation at dating him and wondering if it could work. We worked for a while, but once Clay found out it wasn't as good.

"Whatcha smiling at?" Danny asks, taking a sip of his milkshake as he leans on the counter.

"Nothing. Just thought of a memory." I say, propping myself up on a stool.

"Not even a hint?" he asks with a smile, "does it have to do with milkshakes?"

"Nope," I say, taking a sip of my milkshake too, "secrets."

"Secrets?" he asks, sounding curious, "Now I have to know."

"It's nothing really," I lie, knowing it's everything.

"Obviously not." He taps the counter. "C'mon, tell me."

"It's not that.." I sigh. I don't think he's giving up. "I was in a secret relationship for a while, and I just thought of it when you said something."

"A secret relationship? That sounds fun." he says, "Are you still together?"

I shake my head.

"Oh, I'm sorry."

"It's all good," I take a sip. "When people found out, it wasn't a very joyous occasion, so he broke up with me."

I'm proud of myself for saying that without crying. I'm not entirely healed or over it, but I certainly am working on it.

"Well, he sucks," Danny blurts out, "He should know you're great."

I shake my head. "No, he's great."

"Do you want to get back together with him?" Danny asks.

I sigh, thinking it over.

How many times have I told myself that I would turn away if he walked up to my door? How many times have I said that I would never go back because I didn't want to feel that heartbreak again?

But also how many times have I wished that he would just show up? How many times have I wanted to go back to the best feelings I've ever had.

I'm still hung up on that part.

There's bad things, but there are also so many good things.

"I don't know." I finally answer. "I guess it depends on the day."

He nods, "Y'know? I get that, y/n."

"Did you just?" I look up from my milkshake, "Call me by my actual name? It's a miracle."

"Don't get used to it, sweetheart," he takes our now finished milkshake glasses, "It's a one time thing."

"Sure," I roll my eyes before going back to the tables and chairs.

It felt good to talk to someone. I feel like I'm slowly but surely getting better. I still think about him all the time, and I occasionally find myself with tears in my eyes. Sometimes I'm just a hot mess, but other times I'm not.

Either way, I'm slowly getting back to a new normal.
