Nick shows up at my house at eight. Clay has a dinner with his family. He'll probably be at his mom's house for dinner till late, so we have all night to hang out.
We dressed up for our dinner. It's our four month anniversary as boyfriend and girlfriend. We wanted to celebrate in a nicer way than eating take out on the couch, not that I don't love doing that in every way, shape and form. We just wanted to be fancy.
"This is nice," I whisper as we pull into a spot at the restaurant.
"Yeah it is," Nick whispers back.
"Why are you whispering?" I ask in a low voice.
"Because you were," he copies my voice.
I roll my eyes before opening the car door.
We walk up hand and hand to the front. I notice a car that has a similar dent as Clay's car. He got it when Nick and Clay's brother were playing basketball.
We all thought Clay was going to freak out on them, but he simply shrugged and said 'it's just a car'.
I'm about to point the dent out to Nick and joke about the similarities, when he starts to talk.
"I read in the reviews that they have really good lamb." He waits for me to pass first before turning left in the parking lot. "I think that's what I'm craving right now."
"I have no idea what I want," I shrug, the car completely out of my mind now. It couldn't have been Clay's car anyways, he's thirty minutes away at his mom's house. "Do you think they have chicken nuggets here?" I ask in all seriousness.
"Only you would ask for chicken nuggets at one of the nicest restaurants in the city." he rolls his eyes at me.
"I'm just saying," I laugh as he opens the door for me, "Are you even sure we're allowed in here, Nick? I'm not sure we're fancy enough for these folk."
"Of course we are," he says sarcastically, "I even made a reservation."
"Wow, how grown up," I look around the restaurant.
There are a lot of people here. I see servers bustling around to each of the tables. It smells amazing in here.
My eyes stay trained on a particular blonde man in a green shirt as he goes to sit down. Something about him makes me uneasy, like I should know him, but I can only see the back of his hair. And that could really be anyone's haircut.
My brain tries to connect where I've seen the back of that head before as the waitress starts to take us to our table.
For some reason my brain flashes back to the parking lot when I saw the car with the dent.
I grab Nick's arm quickly.
He stops for a split second to turn around, "What's wrong?"
"Quick," I say, continuing our walk, so we don't lose our waitress, "what was Clay wearing today?"
"Uhh, that new dark green shirt, why?" he looks confused. He uses a hand behind my back to guide me as I piece everything together.
What other car has a dent the same size and shape as Clay's? Why didn't I even look at the color when I saw it? I should be able to recognize Clay by the back of his head, but I can't recall ever seeing him in dark green. The man loves his green, but stays away from dark green.
"He's here," I whisper.
"What?" Nick asks, glancing around. He's probably thinking there's no way he could be here/
As if on cue, Clay turns around in his seat.
Nick and I both duck at the same time.
Of course he's here. This is supposed to be me and Nick's night.
My eyes go wide as the waitress turns, where the only open seats would be right behind Clay.
He can't see us, especially dressed up and together. It's one thing if this way a casual place, but it really isn't.
"Um, ma'am?" Nick speaks up to the waitress, "Could we be more towards the back?"
"Are you sure? That's near the kitchen." She asks, knowing it'll be a little louder.
"Yupp, that's what we want." I shrug, hoping it'll be enough.
"If you say so," she says before leading us to a table in the very back.
I try not to laugh at the fact that the bathrooms are to our right, but I won't bring it up. Nick was very excited to eat here tonight.
"What is he doing here?" Nick asks as he sits down.
"I'm not sure," I shrug, picking up the menu, "I thought he was going to his mom's."
"Maybe I should text him," Nick pulls out his phone, "I could find out why, and how long he'll be here."
I nod, but I know Clay won't see that text till after dinner. He has a weird thing where he doesn't go on his phone during family dinners. But of course he's always on it when we're eating together as friends.
I shake my head, hoping to rid it of Clay. "Okay, let's pretend he's not here. This is our nice, semi-clay-free dinner, alright?" I ask.
Nick nods as he sets his phone down. He looks past me where Clay would be sitting since my back is towards our friend. "Actually that might be hard,"
"Seriously?" I ask in disbelief. Is his presence really bothering Nick so much?
"Well, he's about to head to the bathroom," Nick's eyes shift to the side where the mens bathroom is.
"Look at your menu," I say quickly. We both put our menus up. We keep them this way till the door opens and someone who seems to walk similarly to Clay leaves.
"Okay, now we can have our semi-clay-free dinner," Nick smiles as he sets his menu down.
We continue our dinner in peace. Clay's group is stays there the whole time we are. In fact, we leave before them.
We enjoyed our dinner, just not the stress of hiding that came with it.
Nick drops me off at my apartment. "Thank you for dinner," I smile as I turn to look at Nick.
"Thank you for four months,"
I blush. I lean in to give him a kiss. "Goodnight, Nick."
He kisses me again after I pull way, this time holding the kiss for longer. "Goodnight, y/n." he says as he pulls away.
