Ponyboy walked down the hall in a daze. If it wasn't for me to keep him standing, he would've been on the floor. I'm pretty sure he's concussed.
Ponyboy mumbled something, but I didn't exactly hear it.
"What?" I asked.
"Johnny's not dead." He said louder this time.
"Yes he is Pony. We just watched him die."
"That's not him!" He yelled. The very few people around the hospital looked at us. I gave him a look telling him to shut up.
"Ponyboy, you're outa your mind." I said. He looked at me in a weird way. "He's dead Ponyboy."
"No he isn't! That wasn't him back there." He kept trying to convince me. Or maybe hes trying to convince himself.
I went closer to him and wrapped my arms around him. He wrapped his arms around me too, hugging me back. I noticed how he was shaking pretty hard. I felt his tears wet the shoulder of my shirt as I tried not to cry, but I couldn't hold it in anymore.
"Its okay, Ponyboy." I said sadly.
We stayed there for a few minutes, probably getting weird looks as to why two young kids were crying and hugging in the middle of the hospital's hallway.
"We should go home." I said. "Darry's probably worried 'bout us."
"Okay." Ponyboy said. He grabbed my hand as we walked out of the hospital.
We finally made it home after walking for what seemed like forever.
What was left of our gang was sitting in the living room.
Steve was sprawled out on the sofa, his shirt unbuttoned and his side bandaged. Soda had a wide cut on his lip and a bruise across his cheek. There was a Band-Aid over Darry's forehead and he had a black eye. One side of Two-Bit's face was taped up - me and Pony found out later he got four stitches on his cheek and six on his hand, where he cracked it open on a socs' head.
Everybody was lounging around, watching T.V. and reading the paper.
For a moment, I wondered where the party was. Steve and Soda were planning one.
As soon as me and Ponyboy had walked in, everyone's head snapped towards us.
"Where have you two been?" Darry jumped to his feet.
Ponyboy groaned in annoyance.
"Let's not start that again." I mumbled.
Darry's expression suddenly changed, "Guys, what's wrong?" He asked.
Ponyboy looked around at everyone, he looked a little frightened. He grabbed on my shoulders for balance, he looked dizzy.
"Johnny," He paused, "He's dead. We told him about beating the socs and, I don't know...he just died. He told me to stay gold, but I don't know what he meant by that."
Silence filled the house. I don't think any of us realized how bad off Johnny really was.
Soda made a funny noise and I honestly though he was going to start crying. Two-Bit's eyes were closed and his teeth were clenched hard. Suddenly, I remembered Dally...he was pounding on the wall.
"Dally's gone." I spoke up. Everyone looked over to me. "He ran out like the devil was after him. He's gonna blow up, he can't take it!" I said louder.
How can I take it? I wondered. Dally is tougher than I am. Why can I take it when Dally can't? And then I knew, Johnny was the only thing Dally loved, and now Johnny was gone.
