"I'm going back home." I mumbled.
It was late at night and me and Ponyboy were in the lot, looking at the stars. We were supposed to be back home an hour ago, and I knew Darry would be upset.
He looked over at me then back at the stars, "No." He said.
I sat up, looking at me feet, then over to Ponyboy, "Pony..." I sighed. "Darry is gon-"
Ponyboy sat up beside me, "You scared of Darry?" He teased me.
"No...but I would be if I were you." I said.
"I don't care about what Darry thinks. Not tonight at least." Ponyboy said.
His eyes shone brightly, I noticed. And it was the first time in a while. His eyes looked a lot brighter under the beautiful glow of the moon.
"Just..." He looked over at me, softly smiling. "Stay with me." He begged and grabbed onto my hand.
I wanted resist, tell him all the consequences and all the bad things that could happen. But at the same time, I didn't care either. I wanted to stay with him, it seemed he was finally coming back.
He laid back down on the slightly wet grass, hands behind his head.
I laid down beside him, cuddling close to him.
It was silent for a moment before I spoke up, "It hasn't been like this in a while."
He knew what I meant; since Johnny died.
I felt him take a deep, quivering breath.
"I missed you like this..." I said quietly.
I looked over at him, his eyes were focused on the bright stars above us. "I was always right here." He said after a moments hesitation. But the way he said it, it was like he didn't believe himself and knew it wasn't true, but he still tried to convince himself anyway.
His lips were pursed together and he wouldn't look at me. I thought he was gonna cry.
He took a deep breath before talking, "Everything's going back to normal..." He said, squeezing his eyes shut, trying not to cry. I grabbed onto his hand again.
"Everything's going back to normal, except Johnny and Dally ain't here, and...sometimes, I think I'm going back to normal. Sometimes when I look at the stars, or sunsets, or," He hesitated, "You. I think I'm gonna be okay again."
He wiped his eyes dry on the sleeve of his hoodie.
I gazed up at the stars for a moment, and then back at the handsome boy beside me. He was softly smiling while looking up at the sky.
I looked back up at the sky, "You're more than okay, Ponyboy. You're shining again." I said.
He turned to look at me, grinning widely and pecked me on the lips, bringing me closer to him. It was a bit cool outside and the heat radiating off his body was comforting.
"Thank you, Delaina." He mumbled into the crook of my neck.
We stayed in the lot, looking at the stars for about another hour before we decided to head home. I didn't know what time it was, definitely after two in the morning.
We quietly walked in the door, all the lights were off except the ones in the kitchen.
We walked in the kitchen and Darry was sitting at the kitchen table.
His face was serious, his lips in a straight line and his eyes the same pale, blue-green ice.
"Next time you guys are gonna be out this late, tell me first." He said. His expression didn't change at all.
