“I can’t do this. I can’t do this Drake,” I chanted as I clutched my best friend’s arm for dear life. We were currently sitting at the airport waiting to be told we could board the plane flying to San Diego.
“You can’t get on the plane because you’re a nervous flyer, or you won’t be able to get off the plane because if the destination?” He asked me as he tried to pry his arm out of my grip.
“Does it matter?”
“Yes. Listen to me Princess, you are okay. Everything is going to be alright.”
“No it’s not. I can’t do this. I cannot get on that plane. This was a bad idea, let’s just go home and I'll call my dad.”
“Is the actual flight a problem?”
“I don’t know, the only time I’ve ever been on a plane is when I was leaving California.”
“Okay, why don’t we try something? We get on that plane and when we get there, if you’re really struggling and you can’t face being back there we can catch the next flight home. If we get there and you’re okay then we can go and meet your dad. You never have to leave the airport or do anything you feel uncomfortable, but at least you can say you tried,” Drake suggested softly, turning to face me to get my full attention.
“I guess we could try that.”
“Okay, but you’ve got to understand, if we get on that plane then you cannot get off it until we land in San Diego.”
“Can all passengers on flight 77317 to San Diego please make their way to platform three to board the plane,” a voice announced.
“No, no no no. I’m not ready Drake. I need more time to make a decision. I can’t do this.” I shook my head and started to back away slightly.
“Yes you can Princess. I believe in you and I know your dad believes in you. He’s really looking forward to seeing you.”
“I know he is, but I don’t know if I’m ready to go back there.”
“I promise you, you are safe. Nothing’s going to happen to you.”
“I don’t know D…”
“I know you can do it. We can always come home if you don’t want to stay there,” Drake held his hand out to me.
“This is the last call for all passengers on flight 77317 to San Diego to make their way to platform three.”
“It’s now or never,” he told me.
--
“Princess it’s so good to see you!” My dad called as he spotted me and Drake walking towards him.
“Hey Daddy,” I smiled as I got pulled into a bear hug the second I was within his reach.
“I was starting to think that you weren’t going to make it.”
“So was I,” Drake muttered as he pulled away from his lung-crushing hug with my father.
“Yeah, can we go before I change my mind again?” I asked as we started to walk towards the exit. I was gripping Drake’s shirt so tightly that my knuckles were turning white, but it had become a nervous habit and something of a safety blanket on the flight here so I wasn’t about to let go.
“My offer still stands. If at any point you decide you want to go home then I'll book us the next flight out of here,” Drake whispered in my ear to which I nodded to show that I had heard and understood.
