Title credit: May These Noises Startle You- PTV
“I expect you to be here at nine am so we can discuss your working hours and you’ll be spending the day on the front desk with Jenna to show you the ropes so wear something appropriate. I'll give you your uniform when you get here, but for today you can just wear your own clothes,” Steven explained to me on the phone. It was currently seven and the only reason I was awake was because I had been up all night editing the photos I had taken the other night at the gig, so I could give a copy to Drake when I saw him later.
“I’m guessing this means I got the job?”
“No it means I want non-qualified civilians running my hotel instead of running rings around my security. Of course it means you got the job Knightly,” he replied.
“Aw there’s no need to be so sarcastic with me, it’s too early in the morning for that.”
“Well it does help if you sleep at regular hours.”
“I sleep enough for what I need to do,” I replied.
“Are you expecting me to believe that you actually sleep?”
“I’m hanging up if you’re going to be so mean to me. I'll see you later Steven,” I told him as I pulled my phone away from my ear to hang up.
“Don’t let me catch you on that bloody roof Molly,” he told me before I could hang up.
“Who was that?” My dad asked me walking into my room with my favorite mug of coffee. It was almost a tradition that we had; whoever was up first left a mug on the counter in the kitchen. Or rather, whoever came out of their room first.
“Steven. I’ve got a job at the hotel working at the reception desk,” I replied placing the mug on my desk next to my laptop and giving my dad a hug.
“So you were really serious about staying here and getting a job, huh?” He asked.
“Of course I was. I can’t go back to Cali. Maybe one day, but at least not for now; I’m not ready to face that. Besides my life and all my friends are here,” I told him. I loved my dad, of course I did, but there was nothing he could say or do to make me go back to that place with the memories of my mom.
“There’s nothing I can do is there?”
“I’m sorry Dad.”
“It’s okay Princess. I know it’s tough. Maybe we could make it work.”
“Make what work?”
“The plan you told me the other day, when I told you.”
“What the one where I stay here?” I asked with hope filling my voice.
“Yeah, if you keep this job and I send you enough to make the rent then it should be okay. But you have to promise me that you will call if you’re having any kind of problems.”
“I will Daddy. I promise!” I pulled him closer to me and dug my head into his shoulder slightly.
“Good. Now go get ready, you have a job to get to.” I nodded as we pulled away from each other and I made my way to the shower.
Nine am rolled around and I was walking through the front door when Taylor walked up to me.
“Now you get to deal with his incessant squealing,” she told me.
“How bad is it?” I asked.
“Possibly worse than when you got back from the gig.”
“Jesus.”
