"Happy sixteenth birthday girls!" Daisy and Willow's mother exclaimed. The twin girls excitedly blew out their sixteen candles on their vanilla flavored cake, topped with white icing and cherry pieces. Their father stood at the corner of the room with their mother, his strong arms across his chest and her slender hands clasped together resting on her lips. The girls grabbed the presents next to the cake (customary tradition in their village). They had to move the cake close to the edge of the smooth birch wood table because the gift boxes were so big.

Daisy sat smiling with excitement. She looked over at her twin, Willow, who looked nothing like her save for the unusually long elven ears. Daisy loved her purple haired sister, they were the bestest of friends, even after they fought about silly little things like who was going to carry the basket of wheat to Mrs. Carrol on Mondays, or who was going to help mother bake the bread on Fridays. Willow looked back at her. You ready? She asked, telepathically.

On the count of 3. Daisy transmitted back. 1...2...3!

Immediately the girls tore the brown paper from the contents it hid. Daisy looked at what laid before her looking up in disbelief at her parents who smiled warmly at their daughters. Daisy couldn't believe it. Her parents got her and Willow, both, new outfits and boots for traveling, along with a pouch of 15 gold each, and leather bound journals with quills and ink. "How on earth were you able to get all of this?" Willow asked in amazement.

"Wills! That's rude!" Daisy scolded.

"What? I was just asking! It's a legit question."

Daisy might not have been able to see if Willow was smiling or not behind her black mask but her eye rolls were very visible.

"It's okay Daisy," her mother said "we've been saving for the both of you since the beginning."

"And that gold there is enough to get you both a horse and pay for the saddles" their father joined in "and a bit of food."

The girls had wanted to go adventuring since forever.

"so," their mother said. "When are you two leaving?"

"You don't want us here? are you trying to get rid of us?" Willow asked dolefully, her voice cracking slightly at the end.

Their mother giggled, "No silly, you can stay for as long as you need."

Tomorrow. Daisy transmitted to Willow.

Tomorrow? Why? Can't we wait longer? Willow sounded a bit panicked but she didn't show it. She seemed too busy eating her share of cake. her face lighting up gave her away though. Literally. She had taken her mask off to eat making her purple facial marks visible if she felt any strong emotions. Daisy had them too but her makeup hid them. Willow had a mask because she didn't like the makeup and preferred her black fabric covering.

Because.

Because? Because is a horrible reason. Give me a better reason. Willow paused for a second. I can read your mind if I wanted, you know. So you better tell me. She side eyed Daisy with her cake halfway in her mouth.

Daisy sighed out loud. Because... It just makes it harder to say goodbye. And I wanna leave while we're still on good terms, I don't want to risk leaving on bad terms.

Oh. You have a point there. What do we tell them?

I don't know but you better come up with something 'cause it looks like mom is about to say something.

What??? Why me???

Because, you're the one making this telepathic conversation obvious.

No I'm not!

You totally are! Look at yourself in a mirror, your marks are showing!

Oh.

Yeah.

Fine...

"So, what are you girls-" Their mom started only to get interrupted by Willow.

"Mom!"

"Yes!"

"Uhh uhm, have you seen Daisy's... uh, clllllay pots she made?"

"No I haven't, can I see?"

"Yeah, Dais, why don't you show her?" Willow asked, slowly turning towards Daisy while pulling up her mask.

"Sure." Daisy agreed, glaring at her sister. You know what you're doing. She transmitted. Of all the swords, bows, and arrows I practice making for you, you choose clay pots. clay pots Wills? Really??

Willow smiled at her red headed sister, only somewhat sorry. Now she had to take control over her mother's mind to make her see these amazing clay pots. Most days she was glad to have mind manipulation and this was one of those days but she hated using it on the people she loved or was close with.

"Willow." She heard her father say as Daisy and her mother walked down the terracotta yellow hallway. When her father said something again her mother was shutting the door so she couldn't hear. As Daisy was about to take over her mother's mind she put her hand up to stop her.

"Hold on Daisy." She said calmly. "I know what you and your sister are up to, mainly because you don't make clay pots, and her facial marks gave your conversation away."

Daisy raised an eyebrow as if saying oh really?

"If you two want leave today, tomorrow, or the day after, you don't need to worry about me or your father." She continued "We'll be okay. Now on to the other thing, if it weren't for you two leaving so soon you would've both been in some serious trouble, you know better than to use your mind abilities on us."

"Sorry mom."

"It's okay. Now why don't I help you girls pack, I'm assuming by Willow's reactions you're leaving tomorrow?"

"Yeah."

"Sunrise is the best time to get going. I'll wake you both before then so you can get your horses."

"Thanks mom."

"You're welcome honey."

--------------------

That night Daisy laid in bed thinking. She had a good birthday, even though she almost took over her mom's mind. She still felt bad about that. Why was she actually about to do that? Usually she'd just ignore Willow the few times they tried to hide something. She was going to leave with Willow in the morning without saying goodbye too, what was wrong with her?

I'll tell you what's wrong with you. What was that?

Me stupid.

Oh, it was just Willow.

Yeah, I was gonna tell you to blow out your candle 'till I realized that the light wasn't flickering. Are you okay?

Yeah, I'm fine. She lied. Her yellow marks must have been lighting up.

Normally I'd say 'I know you're not fine, tell me what's wrong' but I'm falling asleep here, so if you want instead I'll send you good thoughts 'till I pass out?

Sure... Thanks Wils.

It's no problem.

Daisy fell into a calm sleep that night, letting the bad thoughts drift away. Her Eye of Ender necklace feeling lighter on her chest.
