chapter 4 - big mistake ii

***

"What are you two all happy about?" Bonnie teased, as the duo climbed into the car laughing. Elena's eyes narrowed at Bonnie's comment, but softened when she saw Caroline's outfit.

"Wow, Care - you look..." She trailed off, taking in her new outfit. "You're welcome." Damon turned to Caroline with a smug smirk and she rolled her eyes at him, turning her attention towards Bonnie.

As Elena eyed the three of them, Elena couldn't help but feel a small pang of jealousy go through her. She had Stefan, so why was she feeling this way?

She looked over at Damon, who was intently staring at Caroline, hanging onto her every word like a lost puppy. He grinned as Caroline let out a particalarly loud laugh at one of Bonnie's jokes.

She remembered when Damon would look at her like that. One second he was in love with her, the next he wasn't, and him and Caroline were... friends? Her and Damon were friends once too, and look at how well that ended.

The car continued to drive towards the house, the idle chatter of Bonnie and Caroline being the only noise they heard. Elena kept looking at Damon curiously, studying his reactions, but he seemed to snap out of whatever haze he was in before once he noticed Elena's eyes on him.

"Excited?" He asked her, his voice soft.

"I'm nervous." Elena admitted. "I'm scared I might hurt someone, or worse."

"You won't." Caroline turned to her friend reassuringly. "Just don't get lost in it. Know when to stop."

Elena nodded, and it was then that the limo pulled up to the house. As they stepped outside the group could see the blaring laser lights, and loud, pouncing music still extremely prominent, even from a distance. They made their way up the walkway of the large house before Damon rang the doorbell and took a step back.

A friendly looking face opened the door and smiled upon noticing their costumes.

"Hey, come on in peeps!"

He invited them in and the trio of vampires felt lighter, as the invisible barrier was lifted and a heavy weight was lifted off their chests.

Inside was crazy, the house was packed to the brim with students and alcohol, and everyone was wearing some sort of spunky Halloween costume. Caroline suddenly didn't feel so out of place with her outfit.

"Welcome to the murder house." The guy said, making Elena shiver. "Alcohol's free until midnight. Enjoy guys." And with that he just left.

The group looked at each other with hesitation, unsure of what to do next. "Well I have to ask Professor Shane something, so..." she started, her eyes looking around for him. "Caroline, can you help me look?"

Caroline turned to look at Elena, worried.
"Go, Care. I'll be fine, seriously." Caroline debated it for a moment before agreeing. "I'll be back soon, alright. Keep an eye on her, Damon." She scolded him, before disappearing up the steps with Bonnie.

"Are you sure he's even here? At a frat party?" Caroline asked, as they scanned yet another empty room searching for the professor. "I'm sure." Bonnie said confidently. "He's the one who invited me in the first place."

Caroline's eyes widened and she stopped, looking at Bonnie with worry. "Oh don't look at me like that." Bonnie sighed. "We've been texting, that's it. He's helping me get my powers under control."

Caroline continued to look hesitant but Bonnie just grabbed her arm, dragging her across more rooms to look for the professor.

After about ten minutes, they finally spotted him, in an empty room towards the back of the house. Professor Shane seemed relaxed, a red solo cup in his hand, wearing a casual flannel shirt and old jeans. He didn't seem like a professor, in fact he seemed more like a student himself.
