- july 2015, summer

a year and a half is what the two best friends would answer when someone asks how long have they became friends. and they were proud of it.

ever since mark stepped into the room that consists of donghyuck in the orphanage, his view towards people changed. and yes, mark was the first one to make a move to approach donghyuck when they first saw each other. but mark never regretted it. they told each other almost everything. by everything, it's everything until the date they were born, their favorite things like mark liking watermelon or donghyuck liking games and bears. they also shared birthdays together and celebrated it in the middle of the night even if it's only for one time in their meeting together.

donghyuck adored mark so much he wouldn't hesitate to hug the older and praise him endlessly. mark was like a role model to him other than his uncle who is currently working to gain the best for living as donghyuck will move in with him soon. mark loved song-writing, singing, playing instruments although in that orphanage, only guitars are available, and it's not in its best condition.

and tonight, they were laying on donghyuck's bed while singing together softly. donghyuck have always loved night singing sessions with mark like these. and the two young men always cuddle together and listen to the sweet voices of each other.

"mark?" donghyuck started when the song they were singing ended. mark hummed in a sign he was listening.
"why were you sent to this orphanage?"

and just then, a pang hit mark's chest. and feeling the weird pain, he shifted in his place for a bit before sighing. donghyuck never dared to ask mark this ever since they met. but he then gathered enough courage to ask the older.

"why are you curious about it? it's not like it's going to change why." mark turned into his cold side which donghyuck hates. but he knew that it was because of his fault as he brought something sensitive that they never brought up. and donghyuck knew he messed up greatly.

"i'm sorry. i shouldn't have asked that." donghyuck looked down on their legs that's tangling with each other, donghyuck being under mark's leg. mark let out a rough sigh and put down the guitar he was playing earlier.

"a year and a half of friendship can't result in nothing. you'll know one day anyways." mark said in his low voice and looked at donghyuck who looked back at him with curiousity. he sighed again and closed his eyes.
"i was abused. i was sent here secretly by my mom who is now who knows where because she basically forced me to hide to safety when she was the one in danger. she's still out there somewhere and i'll have to wait for several years to get out of here and save her."

"so you were forced to go here?"

"yes. now let's sing something i wrote, hm? i don't want to talk about it again."

"okay. but mark, promise me one thing?" donghyuck placed his palm on the older's cheeks and pressed it together, making mark's lips squished into an 'o' shape. the younger giggled.

"what do you want to be promised?" mark said and tried to pry off of donghyuck's hold.

"promise me we'll stay together, okay? we'll get out of here soon. my uncle johnny will pick me up soon, so don't worry. he'll obviously take you in and we can stay together!" the shorter male got off the bed and spread his arms to the air while laughing loudly, nearing his pinky to mark.

mark froze at donghyuck's promise for him to keep. he didn't want to leave his mother waiting for long, especially if it has been more than a year that mark had left her. but at the same time, he didn't want to leave donghyuck, the only boy who wanted to be his close best friend. nevertheless, he intertwined his pinky with the younger's.

"promise."

and that's the last night they spent together on donghyuck's bed, singing songs softly and cuddling each other, as the next day when he woke up, mark was no where to be found. he panicked greatly and rushed out the door, only to see his uncle step in the orphanage early in the morning, 8 am to be exact. he traded words with miss wendy who looked down and let out a tear. and donghyuck knew something was off.

"uncle johnny? what are you doing here?" the now 15 year old boy looked at his uncle with curiosity but also heavy breaths. johnny whipped his head towards the younger and smiled at him.

"hyuckie, let's go home?" donghyuck looked at him with a surprised expression. yes, donghyuck remembered that his uncle said he will be back soon. but he didn't expect it to be today. he still wanted to be roommates with mark, play with mark, talk with mark, and sleep with mark. only mark is his main priority and has a special place in his heart. and where is the boy now is the prioritized question.

"wait, uncle. where's mark, miss wendy? have you seen him?" at those words, miss wendy widened her eyes and panicked, running to their room to see mark's bed empty and everything belonging to him is gone. mark had escaped.

donghyuck ran all around the orphanage and even until outside in the garden. there was no trace of his best friend. tears started forming in his eyes in the thought that mark is absent there.

mark is gone, and donghyuck knew he had to accept it.

as soon as he kneeled to the ground to cry, he felt his uncle's warm hands around his shoulders. he felt empty and useless without mark by his side. he felt like every inch of his happiness with mark is hurting him instead. just one night and he already missed the boy. might sound pathetic, won't it?

"let's get you ready to move, hm?" johnny stepped away and helped weak donghyuck to stand up and walk to his room with mark. he collected everything that he had and left the room like it was when he first came to the orphanage. he had to say, although he made lots of friends here, the only one he'll be missing so so much is mark. and he didn't even get to say goodbye to each other. then anger started taking over him as he kicked the wood of the bunk bed, making it shake. he was mad. furious, even. mark had left him all alone as if he knew johnny was about to pick him up the next morning. he should've told him at least, that he was leaving tonight. but no, he just had to leave without any trace of leaving.

in the end, donghyuck gave up. he stood there crying to himself, but wiped it after, knowing that it was useless. he hoped to not meet mark again and his anger might be ridiculous here, but mark had broken a promise. just like his mother had.
