When he entered his dorms for his bag, Draco was annoyed.  Annoyed at not being a prefect, because he really wanted to deck points from the Gryffindorks, and annoyed that there were classes.  He was still tired from last night, being plagued with nightmares.  Something that had been his companion since before the war.  Since a certain evil lord had made a comeback.

A good night's sleep just wasn't in the cards for him.  A long, hard, exhausting, wake up before you oversleep, no matter if it's just for one hour, sleep was.  And he hated it.  Walking towards his desk, he started packing his books in his bag.  Just as he was about to leave, he noted a letter on his pillow.  He stopped dead in his tracks, and out of pure shock, he dropped his bag in stunned silence.

There was a letter on his pillow.  This was not possible.  This was not normal.  In no way was it from Potter, his arch nemesis.  It was probably from Severus, his godfather.  Telling him to pay attention in his classes, and to do what he could to beat everyone's grades.  He smirked at that.  Stepping closer, he didn't recognize the hand writing.

It was addressed to him.  With shaking hands, he lifted the envelope and opened it.

He sat down on his bed and started to read.

Dear Draco,

This letter will probably come as a shock to you, but I felt that you had a right to know what I was going to say to your face anyway.  Since I can't do that right now, I decided on a letter.  And as the muggle saying goes, no time like the present.  I didn't want to wait till later, so forgive me if this comes at a bad time.  Your choice to accept or deny, but there are some things that I feel need to be said.

In first year when you extended your hand to me I was repulsed at the way you did it.  I had been led to believe that all Slytherins were bullies, and you were no different, especially when you insulted Ron and his family.  When you had in fact been sorted into Slytherin, I wasn't shocked.  But since then, you and I have had no love for each other, and isn't that just sad.

I'm so very sorry Draco.  I never meant to hurt you in any way, and if I could take it back, I would.  Maybe we could have been friends, and maybe, just maybe it would have made what I have to do now, just a tiny bit easier.  There is no excuse for my behavior, but if you can find a small piece of forgiveness in your heart for me, for hurting you, I would appreciate it.  If not, at least I know that I tried.  I just know that I had my reasons for doing what I did.

You are welcome to reply to this letter, although I cannot tell you how long it will be before I can write again.

Take care of yourself, I believe in you.

And remember;  When you are having a down day, Look Up.

What the fuck!  Potter had written to him and apologized.  Why?  And what did he mean by what he had to do now would have been made easier if they were friends.  Just what the hell was going on?  If he were to be honest with himself, Potter had no reason to apologize.  Draco knew that he was a spoiled brat, and he had done the most of the damage between their rivalry, so what was the reason?

I believe in you?  What the fuck did that even mean?  What was Potter playing at?  He didn't need Potter to believe in him, and hello.  When you have a down day, look up?  Stupid Potter, with his stupid hair, and stupid green eyes and his stupid sayings.  He and his stupid letter could fuck off.  Idiot Potter.  "I hate Potter", he sighed dramatically.

With tears in his eyes, that he would deny having, he threw the letter in his drawer, and made his way to class.  Putting on his famous Malfoy mask, no one knew of the turmoil that was going on in his heart.  Throughout all his classes, the letter kept coming to the forefront of his mind.  None of it made sense.  Why would Potter apologize.

Take care of yourself?  Since when did he care.  Since when did Potter give a shit about other people who weren't in Gryffindor?  And the one that made the least sense.  I'm so very sorry Draco.  Since when did he call him Draco?  They weren't on speaking terms, only insulting or ignoring each other.  What was Potter up to, and where the fuck was he?  He needed answers, and then realized with horror, the only way he was going to get them, was if he replied to the letter.

Fuck it!

He turned his attention to Potter's two friends.  Granger and Weasley.  He noticed that they were upset, and had been crying.  Their eyes were puffy and they were huddled together probably trying to make sense of what Potter was putting them through.  He listened to the teachers, made notes when he needed to, answered questions when they were asked, and before you knew it, the school day had come to an end.  As much as he hated to admit it, he wanted to read the letter again.

After lunch he ran to his room, opened his drawer and read the letter again.  Which is when Pansy and Blaise decided to come in without knocking.  When he eventually noticed them standing there, he told them everything, and showed them the letter.  Pansy was smiling so brightly, and Blaise had a smirk on his face.  As if they knew what was coming, even if Draco didn't.

"Always the fucking hero", said Pansy.  "Are you ok though hun?", she asked the blond man.  Draco nodded and said he was fine.  Receiving a letter from Potter was unexpected, but he was fine thank you.  "I received a letter too", she said suddenly.  "He told me that he forgives me for trying to hand him over to the dark lord", she said softly.  Draco and Blaise were floored.  What the hell was going on?

"And.  Are you going to write back?", Blaise asked Draco.

He shrugged his answer.  He looked at them and knew that they already knew that he was going to do just that.  Smiling when Pansy threw a pillow at him, he then kicked them out to do his homework.
