Just like (pretty much) every normal kid, the Wammy's kids all have a favorite subject that they excel at. For example, Mello's was math, Near's was chemistry, Matt's was anything having to do with technology, and L's was either psychology or philosophy.
Mello just seems like he's very good at math. Also, I love both psychology and philosophy (especially psychology) so I had to add them both in here.
