Mello has prostituted himself in the past.
I saw this headcanon on the internet, which is where I saw most of the others, and here is my problem with it. Mello is incredibly intelligent. He grew up at Wammy's. He second in line to be L's successor. He joined Rod Ross' group by killing a mafia bass that "even Kira wasn't able to kill." SURELY he would have been able to find other ways, prior to his joining Rod Ross, to take care of himself. He was almost fifteen when he left Wammy's. He is one of the smartest characters in the show. Surely he would have found another way rather than prostitute himself. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
