Light's mom suspected he had sociopathic tendencies ever since he was a little kid. She thought he grew out of it, but he actually just learned to hide it better.
Light does seem to be either a psychopath or a sociopath. I'm not sure though, my knowledge on the two is kinda limited, I only know basic information as well as the difference between a psychopath and a sociopath.
